I am looking to buy a new MP3/multimedia player. I would like it to be able to play MP3s, watch movies, store pictures, etc. Something like an ipod. I can't decide if I should buy an ipod or if there are other players out there that are just as good or better than an ipod.
I am looking for a player similar to an ipod. Chargeable battery, lots of memory, decent screen size, etc.
I want to here from people who own an ipod or other mp3 player. What are the pro and cons of your player? I appreciate any help you can give me.

| I've got a 20Gb SONY (forget the model number), which is nearly 3-years old now. Still works fine and the storage capacity is impressive, but it only plays music files and doesn't have any of the bells and whistles that MP3 players now seem to come with as standard. I doubt I'd buy another SONY being as the Sonicstage software is a bit shite. I'd also be interested in hearing of others recommedations as I'd like to upgrade at some point in the future, but would struggle to know what to buy. |

Does the Sony software still transcode mp3 files so it can play them?
Talk about missing the boat. After being at the forefront of portable music, with the Walkman, Discman, Minidisk, Sony missed the HD boat. And their first response was shit.
OP: It depends on what you want. How much music you have, how big the device you are prepared to put up with, how much you are prepared to pay.
If you can tell me that, I might be able to come up with some recommendations...

| Sandisk FTW! Upgradable, good quality, wicked long battery life, inexpensive, and you can get the all over the world. Same can't be said about certain other products. |

I looking to pay $200 or less, new.
Music and movies I have a shitload but I don't need to carry them all with me. An expandable memory would be nice.
As far as size, this is not for the gym, I have a small mp3 player for that. I think about the size of a IPOD classic or a little smaller.
I was looking at the samsung P2. |

You're looking for an MP3 player with all the features of an iPod as well as being roughly the same size as an iPod. May I suggest buying an iPod? 
No, really though. They are great. |

| I would buy an ipod except I don't like the way itunes is set up. I don't want to have to register with a credit card number. I dont want to have to resync everytime i want to delete a song. I heard they are really fragile anf if they nreak the repairs are expesive. There are a few other things I don't like about them. |

You only have to register with a credit card if you intend to purchase music. Yes, your iPod does have to be connected to your computer to delete a song, but it's really not that inconvenient. I wouldn't say they are fragile in the sense that they if you drop them they will break. My friend dropped his in a puddle of water and it was submerged for a few seconds and was fine. I, on the other hand, have owned several iPods and have had to send 2 back because they stopped working. Both times it was the same problem. My first iPod was back in 2003. It was the 30gig model and eventually they stopped selling them as they were all defective. Mine included. |

1. If you don't purchase anything from the iTunes store, you don't need to use your credit card.
2. You don't need to sync every time you delete a song.
3. I highly doubt the failure rates on iPods are significantly higher than other mp3 players. No doubt you've heard more complaints about iPods simply due to the fact that there are so many more people who own iPods out in the world.
4. Once you start using iTunes you'll probably like what it can do. One great feature is that it has a built in podcast manager which will delete all the podcasts you've finished listening to and upload all the new ones automatically (if you want.)
Another feature not found on most other mp3 players is automatic bookmarking (I know for a fact that Cowon's players do not do this.) Everytime you stop listening to a song/podcast or stop watching a video, it will bookmark your spot so that you can come back to that spot the next time you listen.
5. No other mp3 player on the market (as far as I know) currently has as many applications as the iPod Touch. What I currently use every day on mine:
New York Times app
E-Book reader app
Safari
You Tube
Weather
The list goes on. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of apps available for the Touch, with more on the way all the time.
Now, some people on here would advise you to buy a Cowon D2. I actually own a D2. And a Touch. I can tell you right now that if you are choosing between those two players, the Touch is a better choice. Anyone who tells you differently more than likely has a history of hating Apple. Fair enough, but be advised that they aren't giving you unbiased advice. |
