I've scoured every newspaper, and they're being particular about not naming brands, which scares me! What if it's that M- brand that everyone drinks?

Anxiety over products containing the toxic chemical melamine is growing as the contamination is also being found in coffee creamer products imported from China and a range of other milk dairy products.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said Friday it discovered that Yuchang F.C.s coffee creamer imported from China was contaminated with melamine.

Of the 41 tons of imported ``Vegetable Creamer Powder F25, only 16 tons have been confiscated, with the rest already distributed to fast food chains, discount stores, hotels and operators of coffee vending machines.

``Weve ordered a recall of the product and imposed a ban on the imports, a KFDA official said.

Melamine is a protein-rich chemical used in the production of plastics and glues. At least four infants have died in China and more than 50,000 taken ill through consuming milk powder and other dairy products containing traces of the chemical.

The KFDA also banned the distribution and marketing of 304 dairy products imported from China until it completes an examination. It will disclose the list of products on its homepage (www.kfda.go.kr).

The authorities ordered a recall Thursday of two contaminated snack products, ``Misarang Custard sold by Haitai Confectionary and ``Milk Rusk, a snack imported by J&J International from Hong Kong.

Moreover, some snacks imported from China even contained cancer-causing substances, but only 1 percent of these harmful biscuits have been recalled so far, according to a KFDA report to the National Assembly.

Lawmakers slammed the food agency for a lack of preemptive countermeasures in the face of growing food safety concerns.

What about the instant coffee mixes? I drink those, not machine coffe, but as far as I'm concerned, they're exactly the same thing.

A product list would be very helpful....or healthful...

That's just the thing. They aren't mentioning any company names. They've seen what that will do to a company.

Let the cover-up and the back-room handing of white envelopes begin.

I have a feeling that we'll never hear about problems from certain companies associated with certain divisions of certain corporations.

That scares me.

Yonhap is saying that ... get this... imports of ice cream products shot up a massive amount. More than likely, the cheap milk was used in making Korean ice cream products, I'll bet. Eaten any Korean ice cream lately?

S. Korea imports large quantities of dairy-based Chinese confectionery

혻 혻 SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has been importing large quantities of Chinese-made confectionery that may have used a harmful chemical as an ingredient, the Korea Customs Service (KCS) said Saturday.

혻 혻 Authorities said the country imported 11,697 tons of biscuits and cookies last year worth US$28.34 million that could have been tainted with melamine, while importing on average more than 6,000 tons of candy.

혻 혻 Melamine is a nitrogen-based chemical that can pose health risks if taken in large quantities. It is used widely in kitchen utensils like ladles. If added to food, the nitrogen can fraudulently increase apparent protein content levels, translating into higher prices. The chemical has caused a scandal in China, where some manufacturers used it in baby formulas, causing the death of at least four infants.

혻 혻 The KCS said that cookies and biscuit imports, in particular, have been growing at a fast pace from 6,409 tons in 2004 to 9,266 tons in 2006.

혻혻 It said at of August, imports stood at 7,460 tons making it likely that the total number will exceed 10,000 tons this year.

혻혻 Candy imports have generally remained unchanged in the past few years, but reached 4,044 tons last month.

혻 혻 The customs service, in addition, said imports of ice cream and other frozen sweet products shot up to 39 tons last year after remaining at an average 3 tons per year in 2004-2006.

혻혻 Related to the imports that may cause kidney problems if taken in large quantities, the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said Friday that it will order all food that has not been checked for melamine contamination to be barred from sale.

혻혻 The names of products that have yet to be checked have been posted on the administration's homepage (www.kfda.go.kr) so consumer can check if the food they are eating has been examined.

혻혻 A local health authority said earlier in the week that it found traces of melamine in the "Misarang Custard" cake sold by South Korean Haitai Confectionery and Food Co., vegetable creamer powder used in instant coffee mixes and "Milk Rusk," which were imported from Hong Kong but made in China.

혻혻 All food stuffs found to contain melamine are in the process of being recalled so they can be destroyed.

Getting into the KFDA website takes forever. It seems everyone wants answers, and they're not getting them. I hope there is a lot of fallout over this.

Here is a list of all products they know have Melanin so far. I added some English, although my spelling of the product name may be incorrect:

From the Dumb Questions Department:

Is Korea also testing Korean milk and milk-related products for melamine, or just Chinese products?

In other words, is Korean fresh milk and powdered milk safe?

My wife finds it interesting that the only maker of products in Korea that has been raked over the coals for this is from Jeolla-Do. Many of you will understand the significance of that.

We walked though a local convenience store, and found SEVERAL major brands of different products containing milk that listed China as the origin of manufacture. That doesn't mean that they had melanin in them, of course, but it gives one pause.

A few big ones that stood out:

DOVE chocolate and Oreo products.

The government and the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) agreed to strengthen food safety controls by better labeling imported foods.

People who produce or import tainted foods and ingredients and redeem fraudulent gains will face stiffer punishment, Rep. Ahn Hong-joon who heads a GNP policy coordination subcommittee said Sunday.

The measures came after mounting concerns over food safety triggered by melamine-tainted milk that made more than 10,000 infants across China sick and which has now been detected in South Korea.

Under the measures, food producers will have to take full responsibility when their foodstuff is found contaminated by toxic food additives or made in unhygienic conditions at home and abroad.

In addition, they must label the origins of imported and processed foods in foreign countries on the front of packaging with letters bigger than half of the brand name size to protect consumers' right to know.

When contaminated foods are reported, the government will inform the public of recalled items through subtitles on television Ahn said.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) will release processes and results of a food safety test, and a food safety committee under the Office of the Prime Minister will directly collect tainted foods, he said.

Internet users are also encouraged to report tainted snacks by posting video clips on the committee's Web site.

The two sides also agreed to introduce the ``two strike-out system'' under which food makers ordered to suspend business for producing harmful food will either lose their license or be shut down if they violate the law twice in two years.

They decided to redeem benefits of profiteering producers and fine up to 10 times that of fraudulent gains, Ahn said.

As part of tighter food safety regulations applied especially for children's finger food snacks, the nation will allow food makers to use food additives confirmed safe by the European Union, the Codex Alimentarius Commission of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States and Japan, Ahn said.

Apologizing for an insufficient food safety net, the lawmaker said his party will establish a standing committee for safe food soon and also seek to launch a parliamentary committee to deal with the issue.

If what is supposedly in these food packages is scaring you, it's probably time to start packing up.

What do you think is in yellow sand? Talcum powder? Think bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, plastic, and even feces.

Now take a deep, deep breath. Yeah, there ya go. MMMMMMM.

And the Chinese claim their air pollution problem will double by 2025 or so.

Dang, I knew that instant coffee is bad stuff by the bad taste and low quality. Maybe that's why some smart people are brewing coffee like Americans do. Yes, I'm in a small town and my PS brews coffee, but eats the worst lunch in the history of man and woman kind.
