I know it sounds dangerous. I cant take my guitar home but just cant bring myself to sell it. Obviously I would pack it up well.
Has anyone ever done it safely? How much did it cost? |

Air freight isn't going to cost you too much more. In a good case, you will be fine paying the airline to accept it as an extra bag. (50 bucks, I think). I've done that on Korea Airlines. They put big red fragile stickers on it and it worked out fine. Pack it up really good. Forget the boat. |

What type of guitar is it? If it's an electric with bolt on neck, consider removing the neck before posting it (I used to do this when I was a student with a strat, used to put the body in my suitcase and the neck in a backpack). A potential problem with putting a guitar in air freight is that in a depressurised / extremely cold luggage hold the neck can warp. Not sure if that is an urban myth though...but I've heard it a few times. One time I met a guitar seller who'd brought a 57 strat from the USA to the UK buying the guitar it's own ticket!! He did want about six thousand pounds for the guitar, and this was about 15 years ago though...
That said, I used to know someone who'd carted a Gibson acoustic of some sort all over Asia in one of the crappiest looking cases I've ever seen, without so much as a sign of damage to the guitar. Best of luck, hope your guitar makes it home safe! |

Unless it breaks down you cannot mail it - it will exceed the maximum linear dimensions for shipping by mail.
You will have to send it as extra baggage, oversize baggage, unaccompanied baggage, air freight or courier.
