Reno is a horrible city, like Vegas but a lot poorer.

For example, the only public internet I could find within walking distance of the Downtown casino area, not counting the $2/10 minutes dialup booths inside some of the casinos, was in the library. The walk there was sketchy to say the least, past a bunch of sleazy motels with ugly strung out hookers out the front, and vacant lots full of meth-heads.

The casinos were aging and unimpressive, with not a lot of variety in games/limits offered. The players were the biggest collection of degenerates I've ever seen, making Macau look like a night out at the theatre.

I found a small place that did decent Chinese and another Vietnamese placw with great pho, but other than that the food situation was pretty bad.

The city is quite high up and the air is clean, with good view of mountains, so maybe the suburbs would be good places to live, but I don't know because I didn't go there.

I've lived in three Nevada cities(Carson City, Reno and Las Vegas) Don't listen to this Samd guy, Reno is a great city. I lived there in the past. There is a reason that it is called "The Biggest Little City in the World." They've got the clean air, you're nestled amongst mountains, they got the gaming, entertainment, close to Tahoe, close to Pyramid lake. Sure it's got its rough areas. The rough area with pros working that he is talking about is close to the Cal Neva. Every city has rough areas. The great thing about Reno is that it isn't too small, isn't too big. A lot of recreational opportunities there. As far as the beauty of casinos, hey, it's not Lost Wages. If you want the megacasinos, go to Vegas. Still, it does have the Silver Legacy and Harrah's. Neither place is a slouch. I heard that the massive Hilton has now changed to the Grand Sierra. That Hilton Hotel/casino megaplex was freaking awesome . A massive structure located away from downtown. It's like a city unto itself. And if you think that Reno has riff raff, spend some time in Las Vegas. Spend some time downtown(El Cortez, Plaza H/C). That's some riff raff for ya. I would definitely recommend Reno as a great place to live. The downside? Lack of jobs. Not much there. Even the casinos are laying off people. It's a tough place to make money. Of course, I haven't been to Reno in 7 years, so things might have changed radically. But, last I was there, it was a good place.

Things have not changed, which is why it is definitely not a good place.

Having said that, I didn't see the Hilton, and only stayed downtown. But to me, any city with a downtown area so unattractive is not a great city or a good place to live. It struck me as a boring city in decline, although the surrounding area may well be a good place to live, as there is a lot of natural beauty to be sure.

I've been to Vegas also, and I agree that it has some bad areas too. In Vegas, however, this is balanced by the good - world class restaurants, hotels and casinos and all the services catering to the tourists, conventioneers and gamblers. To me, Reno was like Downtown Vegas transplanted somewhere else, albeit somewhere more beautiful.

How is Carson City? I've never been to the capital before. I've always imagined something kinda small and very small townish though, and maybe something that might have similar terrain to Lake Tahoe, CA? Or no?

Well, we're all entitled to our opinions. As I said, I haven't been there since 2001, but I doubt the place has changed that much. I have a lot of fond memories of Reno and I'll always recommend it to people. Now, if you're someone that likes all the conveniences of big cities, it might be lacking in areas. Me, I'll take a big, medium or small city, just as long as it have excellent weather and good recreational opportunities.

As far as Carson City, well, it's a nice place, but very, VERY small. I lived there in '98, so it might be a tad bigger now(although I doubt it). Not much in the way of entertainment(other than a few casinos) and no real jobs(unless you want to work low paying crap casino jobs). It's definitely a place that I would drive through, but not stay for awhile. Definitely not much there. The great thing is that Tahoe is close Very Happy

That is a pretty good assessment of Reno/Vegas. Yeah, Reno DOES seem like a more attractive version of downtown Vegas.

I'm not necessarily keen on Reno myself either, but I do like that Lake Tahoe is so close by, and that area is REAL nice.

Good assessment of Vegas...world class all the way, and heavy international and domestic tourism. I like that that aspect is there, but you can still be in Henderson for example and have all the normal U.S. cities things and still be next to a must-visit U.S. destination city.

I'm from Texas, but I fly to Vegas three or four times a year non stop from Seoul on Korean Air. The reason I guess, is because I've seen all of Asia in the last ten or so years and I like getting out of Asia for a few long weekends a year. Vegas has everything, as everyone knows. Sure, you can rave all you want about Thailand and Cambodia and other Asian destinations, but when you've been here as long as I have, Vegas fits the bill. Good food, good entertainment, and still the best gambling. Play blackjack, bet on football, eat well, enjoy the sun, go shopping when you win, see Chris Angel or Cirque de Soleil, get laid, speak English, relax.

I lived in Vegas for 11 of the longest years of my life. I've only been back once in four years to visit friends. The whole city is the strip. Outside of that, there's absolutely nothing. Maybe hiking, if you like doing that when it's 115 degrees outside. You can't get away from slots anywhere. WHen you're grocery shopping, washing your car, getting gas, etc. There was a casino literally right behind my high school. IT's cool for like three days at a time, max. After that it's time to go home.

Yeah, it does revolve around the strip. Of course you aren't going to be able to get away from the slots......it's Nevada! I love hiking and the desert landscape which is why I like Las Vegas. I've done the hikes in July when the temps got to 113 degrees. Love Red Rock Canyon. I agree that the Las Vegas gambling/strip scene gets old after awhile. That's one of the reasons that I left. However, still a great place to live.

How about HENDERSON, NEVADA? It is the second largest city in Nevada. I recently read there was something like 20+ miles of walkable bike/walking trails. Don't know where they are at in that city, but sounds kinda cool.

I also heard of WATER STREET that is the main street of Henderson's downtown area. Kinda curious how that is like.

I did go to downtown Las Vegas, but not that interesting. I like the stucco type housing all over the valley though. Lots of good asian restaurants, and loving holdem poker, makes the region all the better. Mt Charleston and Red Rock do look pretty cool (even though I have only seen them through photos).

I did go to Lake Mead...not that interesting, but at least it is one other option of places to go. Always good that Los Angeles isn't THAT far from Vegas for the occassional beach excursions, etc.

Yeah, I agree with you about Lake Mead. I went there a couple times and it wasn't the best place. Hoover Dam is a must. Red Rock Canyon is very cool, I recommend it. Early next year, I'm doing a nice Southern New Mexico(White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, Roswell), Southern Arizona(visiting Tombstone...yay!), going down to San Diego, then cutting back up to Las Vegas for a few days. Definitely looking forward to that road trip.

My parents have been living in Las Vegas for the last 7 years now. As for myself, I have only lived there for 1 year. Other than that, I have been there for many of the holidays to visit my family.

As for Asian restaurants, my favorite Thai restaurant is there in Vegas. Its called the King And I. Its a small place and off the strip area but not too far from there.

Also, I have done a lot hiking on Mount Charleston and in Red Rock Canyon. I cannot recommend those places enough times.

I just recently met a dealer who worked and lived in las vegas. He was rough, gruff, talked about money incessantly and was an alcoholic and degenerate.

Las vegas, despite nevada's clean desert air, is not a place that attracts those of celestial leanings. It's about money.

I can see the correlation between Nevada and Korea ;)

No doubt there is an unsavory element attracted to Nevada, or even into the expat communities around the world for that matter.

I recall sitting at a casino in Vegas one afternoon and hearing two locals discuss their ex-wives at lengths, and each one was on their 4th or 5th marriage! With 24 hours international nightlife, I guess it is almost to be expected among some elements that live their entire lives in and around the casinos. It certainly adds a colorness to the place.

--------------

RED ROCK CANYON

I've yet to visit Red Rock Canyon...but interesting to read two different posters who can't seem to recommend it enough. I googled photos of it, and looks GORGEOUS! Hard to believe it is so close to Vegas, yet seemingly not so well known. I think skiing at Mt. Charleston is another that most would find to be something that they didn't know either. My first time I heard about it (just a couple years ago), I was shocked. I'd just thought it was one big hot desert much similar to Phoenix. Skiing just outside of desert that is Las Vegas, thats a concept.
