I am sure that someone can give me the answer to this question. I have tried searching both here and on the Internet in general but everything I can find talking about Trash bags or trash in general in Seoul is written in English and does not give the hangul. What is the hangul name for the trash bags that we need to buy to put normal rubbish in? I know that they are probably available in the small shops near where I live but I know that they are not displayed anywhere that I can see and the people working in the shops don't know much English. (and the larger shops I go to are not in my gu)

I need to be able to go in and ask for them in hangul mal.

Can anyone help me?

쓰레기 벙투 (sp?)
Soo ray gee pongtu

You may be asked what 'liter' size you need. 10 liter (ship liter pronounced 'shim liter') is about average for single household.

Good luck.

일반 쓰레기 봉투 (Standard Trash Bags)
음식물 쓰레기 봉투 (Food Waste Bags)
재활용 봉투 (For recycling, depends on where you live)

I've found Family Mart often have them on display.

I went to the E-Mart across the street from my apartment and a Family Mart and I couldn't find them either. I thought they're supposed to be widely available and my trash is piling up! But maybe asking for them by name will work!

Usually I only find them in the local supermarkets (수퍼) or corner stores. Sometimes even stationery stores. The bags are labelled according to your neighbourhood (동) and you can only use the one for your neighbourhood. Since each Emart services many neighbourhoods, they don't bother carrying them. The convenience stores are hit and miss. Just go to your local super and they'll have some.

Emart & many other supermarkets provide official trash bags to bag your groceries in if you ask them. As mentioned above, request seureggi bongtu when you greet the cashier.

Every mom&pop cornerstore sells them too.

I got ten 20 quart bags for 3,800 won when I asked for them by name at the Family Mart. Kinda pricey for regular plastic bags. They must be cheaper elsewhere.

They're meant to be a bit pricy -- they help pay disposal costs.
I believe they cost the same at any outlet.

Can someone please explain to me the whole garbage situation? I'm still trying to figure it out. I know you have to dump the food in 1 garbage can, and then flammables in one, and I don't know what the other two are for. It's such a flippin' hassle separating all the trash. I understand if I had a recycle bin and then a trash for everything else, but this is a little much. My CT had me purchase some special bags to throw trash in. Are those for food or for something else? I never see these bags in the food waste can. Is it because they're too expensive and Koreans don't bother buying them? I'm so confused. This is one of those little things about Korea that annoy the hell out of me.

when I first got here even though I never did the recycling thing in the US, I figured I'd be a good citizen and do as Koreans do.

I dutifully bought my white trash bags and basically learned to seperate my paper trash vs recyclables like cans and plastic bottles.

You're supposed to have a special plastic container for food waste/leftovers but I never really have that (except for say apple cores.. or fruite cores.. etc)

After a while I started noticing that my Korean neighbors don't particularly seperate their garbage all that much and they certainly don't bother to buy the specially designated trash bags for such stuff.

So.. now . I'm doing as the Koreans around me do Smile
