Bah... the faint cries of those who wish they could enjoy free reign on hookerville as in the past, and the pimps who feel oppressed.

It is having an effect. Slowly. But it's happening.

Ask anyone who has been here for a long time. In terms of Itaewon, anyway, police patrols do have an effect. When I lived in Itaewon, there were hookers hanging out of every doorway on the way up to Polly's every night -- and many were hot. Now, there are but a few ugly skanks with nowhere else to go who try to snag stragglers at odd hours, from what I've seen. It's killing them off. It's working. So be it.

And for those pimps who say, "We just moved outside of Seoul where there is less regulation..." I bet they wish they were back in Seoul. They're probably not making near the coin.

Sour grapes.

When they get serious about cracking down, they'll go after room salons.

Good luck. That's pushing rich people with power the wrong way.

No way. Dokdo will be sprinkled with sparkles and handed to the Japanese before that happens.

Room Salons are regulated cash cows for the government.

Going underground? Hardly.

Perhaps the Amsterdam-ish streets with girls in windows are being shut down, but in every urban neighborhood in Korea the double barbershop poles are whirling and the bright neon 안마 signs are still evident every night. As the previous poster mentioned, the room salons are still active. For any Korean who knows what to look for, nothing has changed. Maybe it's harder for Joe English teacher to get his rocks off now.

Korea has never been "in your face" with it's prostitution like other asian countries. 99% of it has always been "underground," if you will. Nothing has really changed. They are just cleaning up the appearance of a few neighborhoods.

That was a good point you made on the SeoulPodcast. Yeah they can bust down on these red light districts but as in most places in the world, and Korea should be no different, the real sex trade is online. It's hard not to imagine most Koreans simply just find services online.

Yep. Prostitution is disappearing from Korea. Uh-huh.

It should be reminded that anytime an economy goes underground, it's not a good thing for anyone, whether it be prostitution, drugs, alcohol, clothes, whatever. Not if you care about crime rates.

I wonder what made them decide they wanted to finally get around to this? Somebody stiffed a cop his monthly bribe?

I still remember hearing about the thousands of sex workers protesting in front of City Hall back in 2005, and the hunger strikes for self-determination. What could make the police turn around and do something that the global women's conference in Seoul couldn't make them do?

Either the bribes ended, or someone appointed by LMB, who is equally religious, wants it all to end.

Someone explained this a few years ago, but I forgot. We have a couple in my town, and I told my wife I thought they were massage places with happy endings. Is that right?

This whole crackdown is probably just a political power play. Someone wants some good PR and a promotion. LMB has caught some real flak in his short time as President. This crusade could arguably win back some support for him.
It's a farce, because in a few months it will be business as usual for the pimps, the hookers and the punters. This isn't the first or the last time it will happen.

Personally, I think it's part international show and part religious witch hunt.

The room salons won't be going away, because anyone who tries to control what the rich do with their penises will get squashed.

They can, however, make Korea look like more of a developed country by taking away easy sex from the common man.

Dammit, I'm common! How come I don't get any easy sex? Man, I hang out in the supermarket eating fruit samples with juice running down my face all messy and stuff and the tarty yummy mummies just turn their delicious little noses up at me.
