I really want to go somewhere this weekend and have kind of left it to the last minute. I don't know much about these towns except they are supposed to be beautiful. And that's what I'm looking for: some nice scenery.

What do you think? And also include some things to do with your vote, plz/thx.

Do you live in seoul? Sokcho is much closer.

Sokcho is not much of a town but Seoraksan is right there and the beaches just south of town are very nice (by Korean standards).

Mokpo is a nice town - closest mtn. is wolchulsan - good but nothing compared to seoraksan. The water around there is gross, like incheon.

I'm going to Seoraksan this weekend - I wouldn't go back to Mokpo

Agreed. Mokpo was kinda dingy, imo.

Sokcho's got more to do. Great hiking, beach, and seafood.

Go to nambu terminal and catch the express bus leaving every hour for GEOJE ("Gohyeon" being the main community on the bridged island the bus goes to, then local bus it to the east coast. You can easily get up after dawn in Seoul and get there before noon).

It's quicker than to Mokpo and ten times as nice (Mokpo is only good as a jump-off point to sights in the southwest. In itself it is bloody unremarkable).

What are the camping facilities like in Sokcho? I have a tent but don't yet have sleeping bags or cook gear (waiting for them to come up on buy and sell) although I do have a couple of portable sam yup sa stoves. Can I rent gear there? I could make a day trip out of it but I'd kinda like to camp a night as well. Bet It'll be crowded this three day weekend.

So what's the best way to get to Sokcho from down south, Busan and the like? Is it possible to do it with ease without having to pass through Seoul?

First, check the weather and make sure it won't be raining up in Sok.

Second, know that the train will take you to Ulsan. To go further north, you'll need to hop a bus.

Your route should run something like this:

Busan-->Sokcho by bus. Simple as that.

No, you won't even see Seoul. Seoul is in the NW.

There will be stops along this route, something like this:

Busan-->Ulsan-->Pohang-->?-->Sokcho. You may or may not have to change buses. I don't remember the name of the city at "?", but the bus station is cool. The city's name begins with a 'G', I believe.

After Ulsan, you'll run up the coastal (route 7) to Sok.

I'm planning on going to Sokcho (and Hwajin po) this weekend..

Can anybody who has been there advise on the best ways to get to the Seorak mountain area etc from Sokcho and what kinds of things are recommended..

I'm planning on going to Hwajin po to the north too on Friday so wont have too much time at the mountain area... I'm planning on spending a lot more time at the beach area than the mountain part but would like to maybe take the cable car or something..not too strenous or time consuming

What can one/two do regarding Seoraksan National Park and the mountain in say a 5/6 hour window from Sokcho..??

I'm expecting the place to be crowded (most accomm is booked) and it will about 1/2 pm before we set off for Seoraksan on Saturday after returning from Hwajin po..in the morning..

Hwajinpo is best in the middle of summer because there are some great beach parties then and the water is so deep that it's cold before July. There are a few nice places to stay on the other side of the small lake by the sea, that inlet bay pond thingy. Walk from the beach back up to the highway then a kilometer south. You're going too early to really enjoy camping on the beach (as it's much cooler up there than down south).
