So, as some of you may know, I have been working at the same Hagwon for over 6 years. Last year, my wife, also Canadian, gave birth to our son here in Korea. The upper management has been very supportive of us and our needs considering we have no family here. They have always stepped up and taken care of us.
We planned to have our son's first birthday in the auditorium of our building. Essentially, a big room, lots of tables, and we were going to bring in Pizza from Costco and my wife was going to make sandwiches and veggie plates. We sent out the invitations last month. Around 45-50 people are coming.
Well, yesterday my Director and CEO call me and say that it is unacceptable to have my son's first birthday in the auditorium, and they therefore rented out a banquet room at a very posh Italian restaurant.
I was so surprised and overwhelmed by their gesture. I have always worked hard for them, and they said that they wanted to show their gratitude. As per Korean tradition, we are going to have a table set up where my son picks something like a pencil, string, money... I have added a hockey puck.
Anyhoo, I am really grateful to all the Korean managers at my school who have been like family to me. |

It does feel good. They have been nothing but good to me and my wife. When my wife had to be hospitalized for a month, because her water broke 2.5 months before my son was born, they kept paying a salary for her.
It has been hard raising a child with no family, and all the managers have always helped us out when needed. I am truely going to miss Korea when I go home. I will have spent 1/5 of my life here, and have made some really great relationships. |

If this is like Shogun Assassins you should place a samurai sword in there. |

Title is a little misleading especially for those regular posters. I'm so accustomed to reading about how a PS or hagwon screws over a teacher, this almost seems dream or an oxymoron (if you'll permit).
Anyway glad to hear at least one good story about a school treating its teachers with some semblance of respect. |

Lucky you on the Original post. That was nice of your employer (assuming he is footing the bill).
In reference to this paragraph you are aware that the employer is required BY LAW to grant a minimum of 90 days maternity leave (60 of which are at full pay) under section 74 of the labor standards act?
Still good that you got the extra 2 weeks pay though
AND it is good to note that YOUR employer DOES follow the law of the land.

Good for you. Nice one. It is a bit tougher for us dudes who have a family to take care of. Sounds like you have a good director there. |

Congrats... hope to get a chance to interview your wife when things slow down.
And just for fun, when your baby goes to grab stuff, why don't you include a bottle of that metrosexual male make-up that "B" advertises?
just kidding! |

Congratulations on the new born. I am glad your academy is very decent and kind to you. |
