Ive always had text books to teach my classes, but ive just been asked to create 90 min lesson plans for a class without using a book... oh and class starts today. Thanks boss.

Can anyone help???

Pre-intermediate level, supposed to be conversation based but also to cover a little grammar vocab etc because the level isnt high enough... I dont know where to start!!

An outline of what to do, internet sites, resources... anything would be helpful!

Cheers.

I can of course photocopy pages from a book but only as handouts to supplement my lesson....

I can choose a topic and find articles and activites for it, but Im a little confused about how to set out the lesson... where I should start, a kind of plan or outline I guess...

I didnt have much time to prepare today, so I broke it down into 30min mini lessons. First was introductions and free talking, then an article with vocab, comprehension, discussion etc and lastly some puzzles and activities. Was ok today because it was only the first lesson but I need something with more substance next time i think...

sheba,

Think in terms of Engage (prepare) / Study (controlled practice) / Activate (creative production)

Engage means to just informally get the students thinking of the topic for the day. This could be brainstorming, a song, a video, teacher directed questions, some kind of survey or task, find someone who etc.....

It is lighter and the only goal is to introduce some of the target language. The teacher here should be unconsciously or newer teachers consciously) assessing student knowledge of the language for the lesson and also interest/possible avenues for promoting production later.

Study is where you control the language output/input and the students can with confidence try to master and use that language. Typically it is "book" time. The teacher models and the students practice very short, specific aspects of the language. scripted role plays, short dialogues, short reading - comprehension questions, info. gap exercises, Q and A are typical examples....there are many more but think "specific and repeated language".

Activate is where you let the students extend and personalize the language. This part should be very tied to their interests/lives and allow them to engage and produce language creatively. Think of it as stretching their limits. Typically, this is where student created dialogue/role play , Games, task based activities and many more open ended activities happen. Also, it is a good time for review.

Many times, teachers don't leave enough time for Activation. However this is the MOST IMPORTANT part of the lesson. Without this non-repetitive and more subconscious use of language, nothing will stick. So it is beneficial to gauge your time well. Pacing is so important. Also, if you have trouble with pacing and finishing this part, try to make your lesson inductive. Just start from this part of the lesson plan and then proceed backwards. Just as valid and useful.

As for lesson specifics. I'll offer that you go to my Lessons in a Can on EFL Classroom 2.0. don't have the time to repeat and you'll find more than enough classic, tried and true lessons there to keep you going. all with downloads, worksheets etc....but make sure to tailor these to your own teaching style. Edit the materials to meet the needs of your students. That's how the best teaching comes about....

Good luck.

So not only does your boss want you to teach, but now this person is demanding that you develop the curriculum? Must be nice to get people to come to your country and do all this crap for them for peanuts.
