Has anyone noticed that Samsung Education Training Center in Seoul seems to have regular postings for their part time instructor positions? According to many previous employees, it appears this company has a HUGE turnover rate. This appears to be due to the following:
1) Unmotivated trainees
2) Extremely high evaluation expectations for trainers (over 90% to prevent termination) from all trainees (even those who quit the program)
3) Reduction of trainees due to opening of other out of Seoul training centers
4) Authoritarian management and working conditions
5) High demand and competitiveness for positions
6) Lack of ANY cirriculum
Other information out there? |

There's a curriculum. It just happens to be poorly designed. |

| Sure would help to keep salaries low if you weren't having to offer raises or bonuses because people are pushed-out. |

I've never known them to use a textbook. They develop their own in-house. As I said, it's poorly designed. |

Perhaps you are refering to the Training Centers outside of Seoul. I am refering to part time positions in Seoul. No cirriculum, just lousy textbook and ZERO guidance or support. |

No, I'm referring to the position I was offered in Seoul in their offices by the Namdaemun rotary (in the HSBC building). Two former co-workers took the job instead when I turned it down. They still complain about the crappy binders of material they have to teach. I saw the binders while I was discussing the job with the guy offering it... no thanks. Way too disjointed and disorganized. I recall the class on speech making and public speaking was particularly useless. A full 3/4 of the loose leaf pages could have been turfed.
After turning down the original position, they tried to get me to take a position at their training facility in Busan, but I turned that down, too. The plant was a 15,000 taxi ride from the nearest subway station, and I would be expected to live in the employee dorms.
But you're right, though, about no on the job guidance or support. |

That's something Koreans will never understand. I don't know how many times I've heard, "you are native speaker... easy for you!"
Most of what you are saying is so common among Korean employers that it's to be expected. You get:
A. Lousy textbooks
B. No lesson plans or curriculum
C. No decent assessment materials
D. Dictatorial abusive, inept, disorganized management
E. Unreasonably high expectations
F. Very unmotivated students (who are burnt out from this ridiculous system they've had to put up with their whole lives)
G. High turnover of teachers and students (for many reasons)
H. Students who complain (oftentimes over petty stupid things)
I. No support, professional feedback or training
It's a big vicious never ending cycle |
