as I wrote a couple of weeks ago...it will only keep getting worse

this had been predicted a long time ago....

the sooner one gets one's money out of korea the better...

for those staying an extra year or two, it would be much wiser to wait it out (or, for those who need to send cash home, transfer a lump sum every 4-6 months). sending anything home at the moment would be a big waste of time and money. if the ratio drops anywhere below the 1100 mark, i'll ship it out. until then, it's renting a room at the bank.

I agree that the last thing you want to do is panic in a situation like this. If you need to send money out, do it. If you don't need to, why would you?

why would you?

because it will only keep going down

I predicted this a couple of weeks ago when it was hovering around .00089

then watched hover around .00086

and now it is down to .00083 or .00081 fluctuating

it will only continue to slide

If you were leaving Korea forever in the next month or so, I'd consider that advice to CONVERT NOW! But the won WILL bounce back eventually. It may not be next week, it may not be next month. It might even be in 2009. But there is no chance that the won will be this low forever. Seriously. Like 0.0%. So if you transfer now you will be taking an unnecessary 20% hit. Calm down.

More to the point: Where are you going to send your money? Markets are down EVERYWHERE. The Euro is currently weak and has been slumping all year. The Japanese markets were hit by the US shit storm just as hard as Korea was. And the US doesn't exactly seem like a safe bet in the present or in the future for growth.

Man, we're getting shelled with this. It's tough to take such a paycut, especially for those of us that are heading home soon. Hopefully, the ship can right itself a bit. I think it's gonna be real hard to find people to come over here(as if it wasn't already). Good luck, Korea......you're going to need it.

Not unless you have a job already lined up. I suppose I could return and try to find a job and substitute teach. I have to send money home all the time. It's not an open for most people to not do that. Many people have to pay off their obligations. Those who don't have such obligations can just keep holding on to the won.
