So I'm thinking of heading down south to this supposedly big and colourful festival, but information about it is very hard to find. I've been aware of the festival for a while now, but it just popped out of my head until I realized it's happening this month. Does anyone have any tips for best methods to get there, places to stay and things to see?

If you're talking about the Jinju Lantern Festival, I'm going there after school today with my v.p. and staying the night.

It runs Oct. 1 - 12.

There are fireworks 'on the river': Oct. 1, 3, 10 and 11.

a group of teachers from our school went to it last year, it was really good and i would recommend it to anyone.

the problem was we were only going to jinju to go to a wedding and then we seen that it was on, all the hotels, motels etc were fully booked, we ended up staying in the worst place you could ever imagine, above the door, it even had chicken wire instead of glass. and the ajumma gave us free bottle of water, only problem was that the seals were amready broken Shocked

if you can get anywhere to stay i would def recommend you go visit it!!!

So you stayed overnight, and didn't sleep? I guess that gets out of finding a place to stay.

I just thought you meant, that you came from afar and spent the night there (all nighter), then left early morning back to where you came from.

Sorry...but is there a specific place in Jinju? Or are lanterns all over the city? And it's running for almost 12 days...so every night there are celebrations? I have never gone, so I know nothing. How far is it away from Seoul?

Hi,

I just got back from being there yesterday afternoon and left this morning. It was a great festival and would agree with what a lot of people have said. Great food, colorful lights and overall cool feel for the city. It all mostly takes place around the Namgang River Terrace. We stayed at a place called the Lotte Motel for 50,000 a night. Not bad when you split that between 4 people. Also, it was really close to all the festivities.

If you want a really nice place to stay, there is the DongBang tourist hotel (like 150,000 a night) I think.

Anyway, most of the festivities are near the InterCity Bus terminal.

One thing I can recommend is to go see the Bull Fighting. Not like I thought at first. They put two bulls in the ring and have them fight. Can be interesting to see. It's in Nampo Dong. It's Free. So why pass that up? I'm pretty sure that goes on every day of the festival from like 3pm till sunset.

Well, hope this helps some of you. If you are looking to get down there from Daejeon, you can get a bus from the Dongbu terminal every half hour and get down there in about 2hours 10 minutes.

it's bigger and better than ever this year! about a third more floats, two walking bridges on the water for better viewing, amusement park rides added, extra two outdoor music and dance concerts, a huge silk industry display tent added, a big collection of totem poles lined up next to the fortress hill on the e-mart side of it all

a bud and i watched the fireworks (they're nightly) from that jin jazz club near the bridge, where four rum drinks are on the menu (hadda try them Smile

) and live saxophone by the barkeep... had kebabs from the turkish guys also selling turkish ice cream, enjoyed the parade the next day (today, saturday afternoon)

lots of people, plenty of waygook too, DEFINITELY worth a stroll.

It's definitely worth going to see (on a fireworks night). The setting, on the river with the castle walls all lit up and the floating 'lanterns' is spectacular!

I just got back from the Jinju festival. GO! It was amazing! The lanterns were cool. There lots of amazing booth selling things from around the world. The food was good as were the fireworks. I was able to get a love motel a 5 minute walk from the festival as well so there are places still available. Go if you have the chance to!
