She won.

He was a stuttering old man. She hit the mark.

She did well, but the bar was set very low for her. Did she win? No, I thought it was pretty even between the two of them. Granted she will get quite a bit of credit for doing better then expected. My thoughts are that this is unlikely to make a huge change either way.

If by ruled you mean that she was succesful at dodging the questions and keeping on talking points, and not answering what was asked then yes-- she ruled.

Im watching in the States at present and all the focus groups seem to be indicating they didnt completely buy it either.

Biden came off as calm and collected, and SMART. When he choked up talking about the death of his wife and growing up poor I think he got somewhere far more authentic than anywhere she's ever thought she's been.

Her performance was one of the greatest acts of political showmanship since Richard Nixon's checkers speech.

The CNN poll I just saw of focus groups said Biden by 52% was more elikely to bring change.

I agree with this.

I also agree Biden came off as smart, calm, and authentic. He seemed presidential.

I disagree with this judgement. I think she disappointed. People have heard so much and she didn't deliver the show. She didn't implode or start drooling. She parroted the canned statements like any average politician can do. Nothing special.

She had to dazzle, and she didn't. She didn't do well enough to impress or badly enough to invite pity.

She failed.

I think (and hope) youre right. My fear at the moment is that there is a large segment of the populace we find out in polls next week actually DID buy it. I doubt taht will happen, but then again I doubted Bush would win election in 04.

Now I didnt buy it, and you didnt buy, and I hope to Thor that no one else did. So I suppose I rush to judgement in comparing her to Tricky Dick(who was amazing at that stuff).

However, my point is simply that she was being a ham actor trying to win Miss Alaska for the second time.

.....and those cutesy little nose scrunches. The constant smiling was inappropriate--serious topics....la la la la la la la la la la....

Expand the power of the Veep's office?

Hasn't Cheney been enough!!!!?

She's not there to answer the moderator's questions?!!!

How do debates work in Alaska?

Biden knew what he was talking about and was at ease talking about it, Palin stuck to the talking points crammed into her head the last 5 days. Still skipping the answers to hard questions.

"maverick"....how many times?

She won in the minds of the unwashed masses of idiots. She is an empty skirt with nothing but platitudes to say.

"They hate us for our freedom". Yes, you honkey *beep*. That and our torture.

Palin didn't crash and burn, she did okay. I can't see this debate lifting their ticket anywhere near the amount her convention speech did, and that lasted only a few weeks. She dodged answers and did it pretty bluntly, I don't think people want to see that. Sure Biden fumbled a bit, but at least he offered substance and came across as far more honest. I'd give the nod to Biden, but most likely this debate will be inconsequential come election time.

I was at work talking to co-workers and caught the last 20 minutes or so, but could only tune into it randomly. I'll have to listen to the entire thing later this evening.

However, my brief assessment was that she did quite well with the little bit that I heard. She continously used the statements over and over that make Dems look bad, the 'they will raise your taxes' bit in particular. Of course the problem with the argument is that Republicans just blatantly spend and spend and spend to incredible levels of fiscal irresponsibility with no intention or plan to pay it back. But regardless, she did continue to hammer that over and over which Republicans LOVE to hear - 'dems will raise your taxes'. No one regardless of party likes to hear that.

I also tuned into a part where she kept talking about how Education is so important and implied we needed to focus taxpayer money on Education, etc. Even as a fiscal conservative, I STRONGLY agreed with that. But generally Republicans are a NO MONEY AVAILABLE for that kind of stuff Party, so it caught me a bit off-guard. The message of it resonated well with me however. I would never vote for McCain/Palin on that message, as domestic needs for regular people that cost taxpayer money are LOW LOW priority with that party.

I will have to listen to the entire thing later tonight, but those are two messages I heard of Palin that she hammered out, and they played well in general.

I missed about 90% of the debate, so will have to listen to it all in it's entirety later.

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/10/02/politics/horserace/entry4497035.shtml

Quote:
Eighteen percent of previously uncommitted percent say they are now committed to the Obama-Biden ticket. Ten percent say they are now committed to McCain-Palin. Seventy-one percent are still uncommitted.

Both candidates improved their overall image tonight. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed say they now have a better impression of Biden. Five percent say they have a worse opinion of the Delaware senator, while 42 percent say they debate did not change their opinion.

Fifty-five percent say they now have a better opinion of Palin. Fourteen percent say they have a worse opinion, while 30 percent say their opinion hasn't changed.

After the debate, 66 percent see Palin as knowledgeable about important issues up from 43 percent before the debate. But Biden still has the advantage on this 98 percent saw him as knowledgeable after the debate. That figure was 79 percent before the debate.

Uncommitted voters views of Palins preparedness for the job of vice president also improved as a result of her debate performance - but they are still nowhere near the percentage that thinks Biden is prepared.

Fifty-five percent say Palin is prepared for the job, up from 39 percent before the debate. Ninty-seven percent say Biden is prepared, up from 81 percent pre-debate.

Although Palin made some gains on the question of whether she could serve as president if needed, she rose just 9 points on that measure. Now 44 percent say the Alaska governor could be an effective president. Ninety-one percent said Biden could be effective as president, up from 66 percent before the debate.

Palin was a TV sports reporter, so she is good at dealing with a camera.

However, I suggest you read the transcript. Her comments were uniformly moronic regurgitated talking points, and often utterly irrelevant to the questions asked.

People, it turns out that intelligence and wisdom actually matter in governance, or have you been living in a cave the last 7 plus years?

More than ever, if the USA elects McCain, I am never going back. If for no other reason that I don't want to live with a mass of drooling idiots.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/02/debate.transcript/ is the transcript of the debate.

I couldn't watch it adequately at work, had low volume, many distractions and multiple conversations going on during it. She seemed kind of alright from what little I could tell. Partly because of the smile, etc.

But when I read the transcript later, WOW. I don't think she knows the true nature of the Democrat Party and what it stands for, and what the Republicans are against. She went into clean emissions and how she was for it, and how Biden should be too - haha...he said he always has been.

She also went into education and how important that is, and then Biden reminded me her that McCain isn't a supporter of Education (as most Republicans generally aren't - it means tax increases, is what the predominant Republican message is with that one).

PALIN did continuoulsly stress how Dems want to increase taxes, but she didn't realize ALL of the things she kept suggesting are things Republicans are generally ALWAYS against because it means tax increases. She also talked about McCain's healthcare plan that would give every American a free $5,000 to buy into healthcare insurance programs, to which Biden asked her if that would be an increase it taxes too...haha.

Then the rest of her message was about mavericks and how all of these foreign wars were necessary and such (as if that doesn't cost us billions and billions of dollars too).

Then the bailout package! She got confused again that she was a Republican. She kept talking about how the big business is to blame! The bailout won't help people with home mortgages. TRUE! But its your party that supports that stuff!

I'm glad she knows who McClellan was. But if she's referring to the commander-general in Afghanistan, that would be McKiernan.

I suspect the reason the name McClellan sticks in her mind is because he ran against Lincoln and would have allowed secession to succeed. I guess that would make him a hero in her household.
