WTF???

So I boarded my usual bus home today and found a driver who, even by Korean standards, was abominable. Within the first five minutes of the ride, we had nearly had 4 accidents, one with another PARKED bus. We were all over the road, hit a traffic barrier, and, at one point, crossed five lanes of highway traffic at one go nearly colliding into a car in every lane. The driver couldn't even stay in his lane once he decided on one (which was infrequently). At points he was driving in three lanes at once because his hand wasn't steady enough to keep the bus straight. It was a typical, open shut case, of drunk driving. By the point we hit the traffic barrier my friend and I were swearing in English and gripping onto the hand rail for dear life, praying we would make it to the next stop so we could get off.

Miraculously none of the Koreans seemed that upset. There were a few that looked a little worried, but none were as upset as my friend and I. Like, why??? I don't understand. I was terrified.

And just for future reference, is there anything I can do to report the guy with minimal Korean? I've been here 11 months and never had anything like this happen before, but just in case.

If you are that serious about it grab a Korean friend or co worker to help you make the complaint. NOt sure what they will do though.

Also, how much information do you have about the driver, the bus etc.

Unless you have clear information ( his name and driver number, serial number of the bus, etc) i doubt you will get too far by saying

Bus 2001, near gangnam station at noon with the frequency of the buses coming in Seoul.

They are not likley to be able to do anything much except watch the guys they think they might be and see if similar complaints come in. BUt even if you had all of the relevant info on the guy he could eb quite sober by the time they catch him.

getting off the bus was the smartest thing, and likely as much relief as you will get in regards to this ordeal.

np......... it was a little funny, no?

Anyways, I saw what I think was a drunk bus driver last week. All over the road near Hyehwa station.

There was a video on youtube a few years ago with an ajoshi slapping a bus driver around because he was drunk. I think it happens alot.

It happens. The fact that the Korean police DO NOTHING about drunk driving means that many drivers are DRUNK. Anyone shocked about that?

If you wanted to do something about it, you could have jotted down the guy's operator number posted next to his picture at the entrance and exit.
Then , you could have called the police while you were still on the bus.

'Long haul' truck drivers, too. I heard (didn't see it myself) that there are secret holes in the fences behind many of the highway rest stops here, with men waiting to take the drivers to nearby drinking establishments.

Honestly, though, I think many Korean bus drivers' driving abilities would actually benefit from being drunk...

I, too often, feel that they think that they are race car drivers, catching the draft of the vehicle in front to sling shot around it. Actually, that might be a fun race to watch! Seoul Bus 500! '32-1, sponsored by UniGlo, is in the lead, but OH, 1005-1, the PAVV flatscreen TV bus, which puts greater clearity and color into your life, cut the corner, sideswiping three pedestrians and running a red light at the same time to over come. 32-1 has a long line up, can he make it out in time to reclaim his lead? NO, 1005-1, being an express bus, has fewer riders is out again on. This is an amazing race, folks...'

Very Happy

And in regards to the police not doing anything, I think they do. I have to wait through alcohol level check points probably every fourth time that I take a taxi. In my opinion, it's much easier for a person to commit a crime than to catch one. Drugs are illegal in America, but yet about half of Americans, I believe, use drugs at least once per month. I don't remember the breakdown, but a police officer friend of mine said that of murders, only half do they find a potential fugitive, half of those get off on a technicality, half of the rest win the court case, or something like that.

Oh my god, did I just defend the Korean police, who take naps in their cute Kia's adorned with a cute puppy dog police man with his thumb up logo (I have a picture), who always side with the Korean if it's a Korean/Non-Korean dispute, who take bribes from brothels, who often don't even go to car accident sites, who blame deaths on fans, who rely on cameras because they're too lazy to go out and catch speeders, who watch cars running red lights and do nothing, but are unthinkably attractive when the are female?

Please, do not think this is the case. I respect Korea and the progress that it has made and is making, but the police departments have not kept up.
