i'd shoot the soda guy.

the correct word is "pop".
"coke" is unique.

"soda" is used by people in california, and the less californians in the world, the better.

Who the hell says "Soda"?

As in, "hey, toots! How 'bout you and me go grab some Sodas from the Tasty Freeze, then take a spin up to Make Out Point so I can fondle your goodie-goods!"

In other words, teenage girl molestors with names like "The Fonz" are the only ones who say soda.

You're from a red or blue state, right...or not from the States at all?

The latter. Soda is probably the most widely used word to describe this object in question.

To answer the poll: shoot the coke guy. I completely understand linguistic differences, but not when they make the situation more complicated. If I have to order "coke" then specify "sprite," that's just dumb.

I've also heard Canadians call them runners. I find it starge when they call macaroni and cheese Kraft dinner.

Shoot the coke guy. I was raised on pop myself, but I mix it up these days to keep people guessing.

Absolutely. No reason to needlessly complicate things.

In Canada I would say "runners" is more popular than sneakers, "pants" over trousers or slacks, pop over soda or any other mentioned and zed over zee.

Funny how the same language differs between places so close...or so far...

There use to be a great U.S. map which differentiated the different regions and what they say.

I recall the Midwest was most often 'pop', along with Missouri. Most of the South said 'Coke', and the Northeast often used 'Soda'. I forget where the West Coast usually stood, but I think it was pretty mixed up out there.

Anyone remember that thread with that map?
