OK but unless there's going to be issues in my actual use- frontal at close range-then what difference does it make?
And most of the reviews I've read praise both the screen and the overall build quality compared to most of its competitors except the HP mininote. Of course you're not going to get high end specs in any $500 netbook so it's all relative.
Could you supply a link? |

I visited Technomart today and had a quick play with the laptops there.
My thoughts.
The Dell and the HP are in a class of their own in terms of build quality. The HP in particular has an incredible keyboard (though a slow CPU tends to count it out for now.)
The EEE 901 wasn't easy for me to type on at all. When typing "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" in Wordpad, I kept fat fingering the keys and had to keep looking at the keyboard. Despite the Dell being the same size, it has bigger letter keys at the cost of a nonstandard layout for some of the punctuation keys. The Dell gave me no typing issues for ABCs but if you're a touch typist then the nonstandard layout may cause issues.
The EEE1000 and the MSI wind were both very well put together in my initial impressions and the MSI in particular looked like a very nice machine. I had no issues with the keyboards. The ten inch laptops are about 40mm wider and 40% heavier than the smaller models. If weight is an issue then you need to consider this.
Samsung and LG have mini notebooks in this range but there's a premium on the price to be paid. 670,000 was the best I saw and the 'official' price is 800,000 or so.
Dells were a ripoff there. They were asking 570,000 when it's 500,000 at Himart and at Dell's website.
There's some Kohjinshas that are even smaller. I disregarded these due to the higher price and some issues that people online have been having with the new model using the Poulsbo chipset. Do your homework before buying these!
IMO the Dell (bought at 500,000) the MSI wind, the EeePC 901 (if you can handle the keyboard) the EeePC 1000 and the Samsung and LG models all are good machines.
I have contacts in LG so I can get the LG mininote for 600,000 so for me it's either that or the Dell at 500,000. I will mull it over and buy sometime this month. |

The Dell Mini 9 maxes-out at 1 gig of Ram. What are you gonna do when XP is no longer supported? Run Linux? No thanks.
Vista needs a lot more than 1 gig to be happy. |
Actually it maxes out at 1.5 GBs. |
Oh, really? I read the site wrong. Still not enough to make Vista happy one day. Hmmm....... but if you're just using it for surfing and email, then Linux might do OK,... however.... Korean sites don't like Firefox and the like. |
Although the Dell comes with 1GB standard I believe some have put 2GB sticks in it after purchase. Not just the Dell either, I think it's been done with all the netbooks. Try a Google. |

You're right. It does take up to 2 gigs. |

Just make sure that with any SSD that it's got pagefile and NTFS compression turned off. Those things can slow down cheaper SSDs to a crawl.
Or better yet, do your own OS install and do it right.
I think I'm definitely gonna get the mini. I will use it mostly on the subway I think. At home I can always plug in a keyboard, mouse and screen.
Now I just need to wait for my credit card to arrive from NZ. |
