From my recruiter:
Quote:
7. Criminal Background Check**- Ok this may sound complicated to you, but it's not that difficult, just stay on top of things and work as quickly as you can: First, request a criminal background check from a state or provincial police office. Second, have this document notarized by a Notary Public. Finally, take the document to an authority who can attach an Apostille Certification on your document for international use and you're ready to go

Will the night I spent in a cell on drunk and disorderly charges show up on this check? Will this affect my visa application? Rolling Eyes

notarized by a Notary Public. what does this mean? Who/what is a Notary Public?

What is a apostille certification? who is the authority which attaches this to my document?

Confused

It's impossible for us to say whether or not it will show up on your criminal check...depends on whether you were charged, arraigned, convicted, what state you are in, how long it has been since the incident.....

Some states don't show dismissed misdemeanors, some states automatically expunge minor charges that are over 7 or so years...just go to your local cop shop and get them to print one out...it'll be less than $20, and you won't have the guesswork. If it's on your background, I'd try to see whether or not you are eligible to have it removed before applying for a visa. It would definitely be a red-flag, and quite possibly a game-changer.

A Notary Public is a person that is authorized by the state to verify a person's identification, or a document's validity (for example, that it is an exact copy of some other document)...the desk officer that you get your record check from will probably be a notary public, and can notarize it there and then (definitely the best option).

An Apostille is a state seal, ensuring that the Notary Public that notarized a document, is in fact authorized by the state to do so. Another $15 or so, and depending on your state you'd go to the Secretary of the State's Clerk's office, or to the State Supreme Court Clerk's Office...look it up for your state.

www.google.com
"Notary Public" "Apostille" "Apostille in <state>" would have gotten you this info pretty quickly.

I've just been through the same process (the criminal check not the arrested for being drunk). I think you should be ok.

My advice is use Disclosures Scotland for your check 20 you can download the forms from the internet, it has less chance of showing up than if you go direct to the local police station.

An apostille means a trip to sunny Milton Kenynes???

I don't understand why I would use Disclosure Scotland, are they less thorough? I'm in the North West so is it ok to use the Scotland branch? And how long to these checks take to come through, I'll phone the CRB tomorrow but I'm hearing it can take up to a week, 4 weeks, a couple of months! Confused

I'm from the south west and used disclosure scotland and it was fine. It took me about a week and a half, maybe two weeks to get the crb in the post. I did call them though to check about the progress, but still if there are no problems with your crb then it should be quite quick. (not too sure about your fine situation, but you could call them and ask about it).

After that then yes, you do have to go to lovely Milton Keynes for your apostille. Its just a piece of paper they attach to the back and is a bit dissapointing considering it costs about fifty quid.

Still, you get it from the foreign and commenwealth office which is a nightmare to find. Wandering round the industrial estate that is Milton Keynes is by no means fun, here's a map:
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-the-fco/what-we-do/docs-and-legal-services/legalisation/public-counter

You'll need to get it signed by a solictor before you get the apostille, there's a solicitors just across the road from the place that does it for a fiver:
Purcell Solicitors
Medina Hse/312-314 Silbury Boulevard.

Keep in mind you also need your degree certificate apostilled too (if you have one). So it would be an idea to do both at the same time.
With extortionate train fares its not great going to Milton Keynes (about 50 quid from bristol) but its the only way to get it done quickly.
