growing up, my mother, brother and i were very poor... we'd eat spam, salsbury steak, fishsticks, and a whole lot of grilled cheez sanwiches... we never ate out... rolled pennies... and so on... when i got older, i kinda learned about the kitschy reputation that spam had, and that most people (americans anyways) consider it a poorman's food along with sardines, spagetti-os, etc...

i'm sure everyone has noticed spam here... it's expensive... they even make spam gift sets... as i'm buying groceries this morning to make breakfast, i impulse bought a tin of spam to give it a go after 20 odd years of not eating it...

first impression: a big block of meet that was covered in some slimy, congealed substance that made a disgusting sound as it plopped out of the tin and onto the cutting board... cut it up thin and threw it in the fryin pan with the potatoes and eggs...

it tasted good... so my question (finally getting around to it) is: is spam really all that bad for you? i've read that it's full of preservatives and is basically lips and aholes... i've eaten a lot stranger things in korea... do you guys indulge in the spam? just wondering if i'll be treated as a leper if i cook some up while friends are over...

as you said ...you see it everywhere and these stupid gift sets are so obivous and ridiculous...it does really make one wonder

of course it is no good...trust your instincts not your melancholy for childhood

though I have not read the label, it is most likely full of salt, processed meats (you don't want to know where they came from), and chemicals

there must be reasons we revolted against it in the 50s - 60s in the U.S.

things here are about 60 years behind...and scientific/health ignorance abounds

I can't believe all the spitting being done in the last few days..everywhere...hallways, steets, sidewalks, schools, bus terminals...is it some rite of passage with the Autumn? It seems worse than ever....even worse than China. And they pride themselves on being better than the Chinese. Ignorance abounds.

It's delicious but obviously isn't a health food. If you like it just eat it in moderation. I usually eat a can every two weeks or so.

I find that bulgogi ham is a tastier and less greasy alternative to Spam. I just made some udon noodles with it. Pretty tasty.

The bulgogi ham IS much tastier. We bought a whole bunch of spam recently though when there was a really good sale. We slice it, fry it with onions and garlic, and eat it Filipino styel with rice.

Spam is tasty stuff. Spam, cheese and pickle sandwiches rule!
Apparently when it is made, it starts as a liquid and is poured into the cans.

I love spam. It has to be eaten hot and with kimchi. Covered in egg and fried is the best and served with kimchi, seaweed paper and rice. This is the family's favourite breakfast. I also love it in kimchi jigae or any kind of kimchi soup. The kids always fight over that last piece of spam.

I don't think spam is that bad, nutritionally. The ingrediants are very simple and there is no msg in it. If you eat hot dogs I see no reason why you wouldn't enjoy spam in moderation. Cooked right, I wouldn't think less of someone who serves spam.

What Koreans call 'ham', though....the brown stuff that looks like a brick of meat...that's a different story. That stuff's just wicked. Looks like plastic and tastes like chewy chemicals. Mad

True, but let's be fair. You come from a country where chips in gravy is considered 'good eating'.

From Wikipedia:

A 56 gram (approximately 2 ounce) serving of original Spam provides 7 grams of protein, 2 grams of carbohydrates, 15 grams of fat (23% US Daily Value) including 6 grams of saturated fat (28% US Daily Value), and over 170 calories. A serving also contains nearly a third of the recommended daily intake of sodium (salt). Spam provides very little in terms of vitamins and minerals (0% vitamin A, 1% vitamin C, 1% calcium, 3% iron). It has been listed as a food that is a poor choice for weight loss and optimum health and as a food that "is high in saturated fat and sodium". [7]

So, yes, Spam is bad for you.
