I've been an AVAST user for quite a while. It's done well, but I realize there are some products out there that will allow you to schedule scans as free versions, so I've been trying some.
I am currently trying Avira Free on 2 machines. I also installed Threatfire 3.5 along with it. So far, so good. Hate the scan popups, so I turned them all off. Not the easiest to modify, and not fast at scanning, but seems OK. Threatfire seems to be good.
I tried Bitdefender's best 2009 Security package, and i'm really bummed that it crashes a Visual C++ runtime error on my wife's machine when I visit hanmail. Other machines seem OK. I read that many are having this problem, and most seem to be from Asian countries. So I dumped that.
Finished a full trial with Kapersky, and it seemed OK, but I was never sure what it was doing... lots of information, but not in all of the places I liked to see feedback in. Too expensive, and Russian..... not happy with Russia now. Dumped. |

I tried Avast. It was fine. No problems.
I tried Avira. It protected me just fine, but had an annoying feature which interrupted whatever you were doing to inform you it had updated and would you like to buy the full version. Even bringing you out of a game and causing the game to crash! I couldn't find how to turn that notification off in options, so I ditched it.
Back to AVG again. I've never had any problems with it. |

Total Security is what I was running (trial).
Only happens on my wife's Korean language computer (not sure if that's the reason, but others in Asia are having issues, too). The problem is that a Visual C++ runtime error window pops up when you visit certain websites (Hanmail mail page for me). When you press OK, it just shuts down Bitdefender. The logo grays out, and it tells you to reboot. Surfing was faster with Bitdefender than Avast. I miss that.
Very annoying. A shame, because I love the program on my computer at work. Some guy on the help forum was upset because he'd convinced his workplace to buy 25 corporate licenses of Bitdefender, and most computers there are having this problem. Bitdefender doesn't have an answer for him, and it's been a month.
The same issue was addressed in April, but it's back. People are angry.
I'm finding Avira OK (just had it a day or two) as long as I set everything to run in silent mode (no pop ups). Was a bit confusing to find out where to do that.
Still get stupid "buy me" pop-ups on boot, though. |

Yah, it's cheap, and it does a lot.
Unfortunately, I was planning to buy 3 licenses, but not working on my wife's computer changed my mind. Bummer. |

Wow bitdefender is awsome. You can even create little av network to control all av at the same time.
As for crashing on certain web pages disable the antiphishing. That should do it. |

I also us BitDefender and love it. Great program. However, as I don't use Hanmail, I can't comment on your problem. Seems that Hanmail , from what everyone has told me, is pretty much a huge, steaming, piece of cr@p. I do, however, visit numerous Korean websites and haven't had a problem. |

Well, bitdefender just pooped-out and closed itself on my work machine now (darkened icon). I'm glad I just decided to try it before buying it. That OS is in English, too. |

I tried BitDefender, it was good on day one. But, on day 2, my Vista laptop took a long long time to boot up, about 10 minutes. So I dumped it. Right now I'm using AVG. |

Kind of surprising you guys are having problems with BitDefender. I've been running it almost a year, with Vista, and have been visiting Korean sites without so much as a hiccup. Sorry to hear about your problems. As I mentioned before, I think it's an awesome program. Very light on your system and does an excellent job. Anyway, hope you can find one that works for you. BTW, I tried Kaspersky's free trial and it locked up my office computer running the scan for, what they estimated, would be 2 weeks. I quickly dumped it... |
