The Official 2009 Rock Hall Nominees: Metallica, Run-DMC, The Stooges, Jeff Beck, Chic, Wanda Jackson, War, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and Bobby Womack

Top 5 vote recievers get in.

Metallica & Run-DMC get nominated in their first year of eligibility. I believe it to be just as they have both been hugely influential- great inspirations to so many who followed after them.
Good to see The Stooges get the nod, too.

Here's where we get to my questions:
In reporting the nominees, a couple of articles mentioned two omissions- Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bon Jovi.

I don't know how anyone could deny Stevie Ray's greatness. However, do you think he fits into the category of RnR Hall of Famer?

Bon Jovi have been hugely popular worldwide- they have a heck of a lot of fans. That being said, I personally can't think of any reason they should get a nomination. They were not innovative. They were not influential.
Popularity alone should not deem one a "great".
Can anyone think of a compelling reason that they should get a nomination?

Just found this on the site:
"Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll."

Another topic for discussion:

Rush, yes!
They have a lot of people that diss them for varying reasons.
I have met so many people that hate them.

However, they have a world of fans. Talk to so many musicians and they cite Rush as an influence and big time fave.
Many of the really great bands nowadays love Rush!

I would say that they definitely fit the criteria, but something tells me they will never get in. Too many people just love to hate them.

I'm waiting for Jane's Addiction's turn. They better get the respect they deserve!

Metallica will probably sue them for nominating them.

Yes, because The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is making money from their image.

Jeff Beck, War, Mettalica are LOCKS.... the last two I'm not sure. Probably will include The Stooges.

I'd say the Rock'n'roll hall of fame, with the past inductees as a barometer, might consider:

Wham!

Depeche Mode

Culture Club

Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Whitney Houston

Janet Jackson

Good Luck to the deserving inductees!

rush is backed hard by this rush fan. even if you hate rush - and there are legions of people who do - you can't deny their unique place in rock history.

stevie ray vaughan... he gave rock guitar a much needed shot in the arm in the mid-80s. definitely contributed to the perpetuation of rock and roll in a time when it was very stagnant.

bon jovi, i'd say that every anthemic hair-metal band took some influence from them, especially when you think about record production.

but metallica? it's offensive to even suggest them unless motorhead has been inducted first. metallica was part of a wave, motorhead created one.

Rush are garbage.

I'd like to see The Stranglers get nominated.
Golden Brown has to be one of the most under-rated song on the planet.

Closer to the Heart is kitch rubbish. I don't think Rush have much of a following aside from the inbred hicks from Canadian small towns.

A unique place in music history. In the rubbish bin of prog rock next to Emerson Lake and Palmer and Yes. I though punk put an end to that pretentious crap.

"Tell me what it's like to have bad taste?" John Lydon.

How about some really old school Canadian punk rock.

The Viletones-Possibilities
BFG
The Diodes- I'm tired of waking up tired

The Viletones were making punk back in 1977. Nirvania covered their song Possibilities. The Diodes were around during The Crash and Burn and classic early Toronto punk film The Last Pogo.
