I haven't gone, but want to. It's the land of the, "birds of paradise," and cannibalistic tribes though some say cannibalism is no longer practiced. It is said to be the most heterogeneous country on Earth when it comes to both people and animals. It is said that only 70,000 foreign tourists go there each year, but yet it's one of the most fascinating though risky places to travel. It's not far from Bali and Australia, but so isolated yet is a real magnificant cradle of life on the Earth.
Let's talk about some really exotic international travel.
Anyone know anything about this land and traveling to and within it? |

It is true that PNG has a very high HIV prevalence, but so does much of the world. HIV is pretty much everywhere which gives us all a legitmate reason to cautious, even fearful, of having sex, getting tattoos, and any medical procedures done.
I would venture to guess that these business men in your article were cheating on their wives while in PNG.
It's too bad that crime and disease runs rampant in PNG as it's a very fascinating place. I take it that those 70,000 visitors each year are wealthy guys paying a fortune for guides and air charters.
I'm curious if anyone on Daves have went there and what they experienced. |

Good travel info.
I tried to find a documentary I saw maybe 6 months ago about two extreme bikers (dirt bikes) who hooked up with a local extreme biker. The three of them rode bike trails (or at least blazed a few trails) through the rain forests of Papua New Guinea while visiting and staying at different villages. Sorry, I couldn't find it, but maybe there is more "off the beaten path" activities there than mentioned on these travel sites. Good luck with your search. Cheers. |

I saw some video once from a peace corps volunteer who had been stationed there - and yes, it was interesting.
however, now it's supposed to be getting clear-cutted pretty badly and I've heard a lot of the land is being pillaged like Indonesia - a lot of hard wood there
you might find it difficult to travel - there are some interesting areas tho and a lot of different languages and cultures.
good luck; I've wanted to go myself - knew someone who went diving there also - is supposed to be great for that - I'd like to know if you go - can you pm ? |

I have not been to Papua New Guinea but did just spent the month of August travelling independently and solo in West Papua. I'm not sure if you are interested in hearing anything about that considering it technically is not the same country?
If you are interested, I will post some things when I have a bit more time.
It was the most challenging and amazing travel I have ever done. |

I was in Rabaul, PNG in 2002. Loved it! Mt. Turavur was active and it's quite a spectacular setting with volcanos on either side of the harbour entrance.
If you get there you must go to the volcano observatory and Yammamoto's bunker. |

My uncle's brother and wife were Christian missionaries in PNG back in the 60s. They had, as one would expect, some crazy stories regarding the natives. In one such story, they were caught in a tribal clash where several people were shot with arrows and then hacked to pieces. There were rumors amongst the missionaires that canabalism was still very much a part of their culture but never directly observed. |

I heard Port Moresby is perhaps the most dangerous city in the world (though not including special cases in war zones such as Baghdad) in terms of violent crime and lack of security, and that the odds of you getting assaulted or killed and robbed there are quite high. Could be an exaggeration, but it sounds pretty sketchy.
I had an Aussie friend who just stopped over at the airport there and said it felt like he was inside a green zone with soldiers all over guarding the doors carrying heavy machine guns... |

I stand corrected... apparently Port Moresby is a much worse place to live than even Baghdad, and is in fact ranked the worst in the world (scoring highest on this unit's "hardship" table): http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2004/sep/22/population.davidfickling
Guess I'll cross that one off my list... |

That's too bad that PNG is one of the most dangerous corrupt places in the world as it's an extremely special place.
Maybe the violence is caused by injustices the rich have done there over the years. The rich waltz in with their teams and do what ever they want like steal natural resources. Their forests are being logged and sent to China for processing and then end up in products sold in America and Europe. Land owners are being violated by getting their land raped of the forest by force. That's too bad that it's corrupt and they're being thieved of what's theirs instead of the international community coming to agreement with them and compensating them for what is taken. Instead, it's corruption at it's finest.
That's too bad it's got to be this way, because it shouldn't be. |
