I've noticed one of my K coworkers who I know is married (or at least says she is) wearing her wedding ring 20% of the time..probably less. I've seen it among some of the others in the office too, though not nearly as much.

Does this mean precisely what it suggests...or is it somewhat normal? Has anyone else seen it among married K women?

It just means she isn't wearing her ring. It's not a steadfast rule like it is back home.

The meaning is it's annoying to wear a ring - not an invitation to cheaters. Just ask her why - ajummas tend to be very open and honest - brutually so....

Married Korean women tend not to wear wedding rings because they're too expensive and valuable to wear around everyday. The rings themselves aren't held to be as sacred as they are back home. Since people don't usually approach strangers, guys usually don't hit on women they don't know, unless of course they're in a club.

And married women never go to those. Wink

That's what I was thinking too. In the states, men usually look at the woman's left hand to see if she's married and whether they should approach. If the guy doesn't get it, she just holds up her hand and goes "I'm married!" Even women who are married get approached so a wedding ring is a must in such a society. I have yet to see a Korean woman approached here in public and I've never seen it with East Asian women in the U.S. with an East Asian guy doing the approaching. I have seen Korean women without wedding bands with babies and I doubt these women are having these kids out of wedlock.

Wedding rings are a european custom which has been adopted by most of the world. It simply doesn't have the significance as it does back home

I also notice Korean wedding bands are so shiny and new looking whereas in America, they're all dull and worn. Must be the fact that people rarely wear them.

Are we talking about wedding rings or engagement rings? Someone mentioned a big rock.

I've noticed that when I talk about wedding rings to Koreans they think I'm talking about the engagement ring i.e. the one with the rock. They don't know what a wedding ring actually is. If you go to a Korean wedding you'll also see that they don't exhange rings during the ceremony.

I asked this same question the other day. The answer I got has been covered here regarding the cost of the item. Also, the woman explained to me that it is annoying to wear the ring. Since she does all of the cooking and cleaning, it interferes with her ability to do housework. I was told they only put them on for show when they go to nice events.

Koreans buy expensive watches together, which they also often do not wear.

I think the extra shine is because the gold tends to be a higher grade - 18K or 22K - perhaps another reason they're not worn as much.

It's not just women. It's not viewed the same way... it's just a piece of jewlery. Like getting a necklace or bracelet.
