I just started at a Publice School and just found out that we ahve to pay for the lunch in the cafeteria, the cost is 3,100won. Is this normal? I know it sounds a bit cheap but I had been used to free lunches in hagwons. I would'nt mind so much but the food so far is not so great. |

I pay 50k won a month, so I suppose it is normal. I don't mind as I quite like the lunches. |

Ok. I guess its not too bad really, I was just a bit shocked. I hope the food gets a bit better here though lol. I guess the old saying "there's no such thing as a free lunch" holds true lol. |

Mine are free at my public school. 3,100 sounds quite cheap though, thats if its per month and not per day!? But if I had to pay to eat the food they served me here then I'd rather bring my own and have something I wanted, rather than octopus and that lovely rice soup. Still, its free so I'm not complaining... |

I pay 2,500 a day. Food isn't great, but it's decent value for money, and I teach in a rural area so going out for lunch isn't really an option. |

I am getting a small fridge for the teacher's room. Not going to pay for school lunch. They are also having me pay bus fare to school and back. If you want to fight this, refuse to pay for anything unless you really have to.
I think the school is getting the hint, because they aren't asking to me to buy anything more now.

If you are at a public school they are not free...
and if you haven't had them deducted from your salary yet you will get a surprise one day when they do.

Why would you not have to pay for your bus fares?
My PS runs about 30,000 a month for lunches. 3,100 sounds way too high! |

I'm not paying as I don't eat lunch at my main school 3 days a week while my other school doesn't even serve lunch where they bring cold rice and kimchee for lunch. The small country school where each grade is only 6 or 7 students, but designed to have 20 to 30 per class, lacks enough funding to have lunch nor any drinking water. I don't understand why they don't bus those few students to a larger school which is only 15km away where they have adequate resources.
I walk home 3 days a week to eat lunch and then bring food the other 2 days. |

In the grand scheme of things, it becomes a toss up. I have been teaching for almost 5 years now, and this is the first school that has required it. My salary is lower than what I used to earn at a hagwon, but I have to teach twice as many kids. In addition, the hours already exceed what I signed on for. Putting these things into perspective, I would think the school would offer a compromise. Either they pay for lunch or transportation, and I pay for the other.
Since transportation is fixed, it makes more sense for them to pay for that. It's also cheaper for them than what they would charge for lunch. I might go out to get something also which would obviously be on my dime. I have no problem with paying my share, but when the school gets back money it gives out you got to wonder if there are ulterior motives behind it.
On principle, I try not to give my employer money. It should go the other way. |

The lunch at my school comes and goes quality wise but is only 2500won a day. For me, it's better than making my own because I hate doing small chores. |
