|
|
I've noticed a decent amount of fellow waegooks walk around with a back pack....and they look FULL & big.....
I'm gonna guess it's filled with teaching supplies, but sheesh....that much? One tall guy actually had a hiking backpack and had the waist strap tied on....can't just leave it at your hagwon at your desk?
I've seen it enough that it's making me curious...or is it one of those Canada things us migooks wouldn't understand? |

They're a studious lot!
These days I carry around a small messenger bag, I think that's what they are. The little side sling ones. Keep my notebook, pencils, umbrella, Latin study book, a textbook for my grad classes, and a novel. |

It's a Canadian thing. They have to carry around their maple syrup and bear spray somehow. |

I see a bunch of backpacks on the dudes and the majority of the girls that I see have big, knitted, low-hanging satchels and long hippie skirts. |

Exactly! It's always confused me...I didn't think most ESL teachers were the outdoors type.... |

Well watch out. You could very well run dangerously low on maple syrup or get eaten by a bear. Both are horrifying prospects. |

Maybe they're packing around stuff that reminds them of home.
Being that most of us don't have a classroom where we have to visit many classrooms, we don't have a place to put things so we have to carry them around. This includes your teaching materials, what nots, and maybe your lunch. |

Bear Spray! That just made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that!
On a side note, when away from work, it seems like I have been carrying my dark blue Boston Bruins backpack (bought it in Jeonju back in 2001) forever. Sometimes, I feel like Linus and his blanket, i.e. what would I do without it (umbrella, sunglasses, ipod, notebook, pens, etc.). My little backpack (college size, like Jansports) has become such a part of my routine. It's usually not loaded for bear "spray." Though I sure could use some Ajumma spray for the difficult days on the sidewalk. Cheers! |

I sometimes take my backpack along for shopping. It makes carrying 15 kilos of goods much easier.
I suppose some people might actually be traveling around in Korea.
Perhaps someone has a PhD. in hangman and has 47 boxes of chalk in their backpack. |

A lot of teachers teach at different schools or have privates and hence carry their day's materials with them. I used to do that when I taught on a tourist visa, but now that I have an office, I travel light. Don't think it's a Canadian thing!
Come to think of it, if Immi wanted to bust illegal teachers, they wouldn't be that hard to spot. |

I almost read that as "big titted, low-hanging ..." |
