In previous posts, I've mentioned that I've banned cellphones in my classes. Now, however, I'm thinking of banning all electronics in my classes altogether, including those English-Korean dictionaries that the kids love so much (it seems like many of the translations are cr*p to me anyway).

Is this a good idea? On the one hand, if they don't know the word to use, they shouldn't be using it in the first place anyway. On the other, I feel like I may be hampering them from learning new words that they may actually want to know/understand.

Ban them. If for nothing else, it's agood classroom management nove-don't pay attention to the inevitable bleeding heart, hand wringing whingers who will tell you otherwise.

All electronics are banned in my classes.

I encourage electronic dictionaries. I don't have a co-teacher, so sometimes we need to know what words mean. i encourage them to get them out and explain meanings to the class. When not in use though, they must be put away. Cell phones I own.

I havn't had a real problem with electronics so far... But if something (anything from cellphones to puzzle games to a jar full of paper stars) is destracting my students I'll confiscate it and leave it on my desk until the end of class... (Unless its something fun like a sliding puzzle in which case I'll sit there and play with it until the end of class while the students are working in their notebooks and then give it back at the end of class )
