How long can mosquitoes go without food/drink?

Why is it that every time I kill a mosquitoe another one comes back the next night - and there's only ever 1/2 a night.

When I leave my window open, how come I'm not bitten to death by the morning?

How come I still get bitten in October, when I leave all my windows closed?

When do they stop coming?

I've been sleeping under a mosquito net for years now (I got mine from a departing teacher), and I swear, it's one of the simplest things I have done which has improved my quality of life the most.

No more buzzing around my ears and face, no cool air movement from them flying real close to my face, no waking up or tossing and turning because of them, no turning on the lights in the middle of the night, armed with a rolled-up Korean Herald, swatting like a tired, bleary-eyed, but determined Micheal Douglas in the opening scene of Falling Down, no scratching, and most importantly...

No they bite more than once. If I am extremely tired I won't wake up until I get bit for like the fourth time. I turn on the light walk and walk around the room with a can of Raid and there is always only one.

They bite several times if they don't get their fill.

I purchased one of those tennis racket zappers for about 5,000 won. Excellent investment. I try to make sure they're all dead before I go to sleep. They are attracted to your breath, and LCD panels, so I use those to bring them in close when it's dark in the room, then zap away. I also check the walls and ceiling, where they sit and wait. If you lay the racket over them, they'll jump up into it and get zapped.

You should be able to pick up mozzie nets in most of the smaller local Korean supermarkets. At least, you can down our way. Look for something similar to this on the shelves. They're usually in blue/red/green jackets and cost about 30,000 or so. I've had mine on all summer and while the odd one does still get through, you get bitten significantly less than sleeping without one, so it's a pretty good investment really.

I sealed up my apartment nice and tight, but now I'm getting bitten at work cause the window has no screens and it's right by my desk. I'd leave it closed and just sweat, but no one else in the office agrees with that. They're not the ones getting bit though!

Ok, if you don't mind inhaling freaky chemicals, and have woken up with exponential mosquito bites, then look for a plug in thingie. It's some kind of oil, not sure if it's linked to some kind of cancer...probably is, but acting like a crackhead going through the DTs is not my idea of a good time. I bought some in one of those mom and pop shops.

Its real easy-- sleep with a fan on. Moogies can only fly if the air is very still. During my year in Kimpo with out screens I was not bitten once. But then again, there is the possibilty of fan death;).

Showering before bed also helps put them off the trail.

The black type of moggie is really a viscious wee so and so, commonly found on beachs and the like.
One night my wife was bitten 6 times on the top of her wrist.

One advantage of having hairy arms and legs is that you can feel them land on you. Asians with less hair, often don't feel them until they bite. That is just a my point of view, although I can't say I have particularly hairy wrists so it's no explanation as to why my wife got bitten more.

Last year, we had a major problem with moggies, bought a large net and hung it iver half the bedroom at nights. So simple, yet so effective. They may not be in the shops now, as it is the end of season, but they will be on the internet for 10-20K.

I've seen mosquitos in January here. Buy a net if you can't keep the windows closed.

If you are only getting 1 bite a night, are you sure it's a mosquito? I was getting one big bite a night and it turned out to be one of those kissing bugs that was hiding between my wall closet and the wall. I would often find a small spot of blood on my pillow or sheets which tipped me off. I gassed that little bastard with a half can of cockroach spray! Anyway, right as rain now.
