Well good luck on your new life wherever that may be. Now, do you have a toaster you can sell me before leaving by any chance? |

Try getting a decent gig? My public school job is grand....I doubt I'll ever live this good again. |
I thought a lot about doing that actually. But decided against it.
I think that with the exchange rate sucking so bad right now, it's a good time to go back to the US for a while. Also I have an opportunity to work a very fun, high paying job in a city that i've dreamt of living in for years. I gotta go get it.
I might try Korea again in the future. But not right now. But i'm thinking that if I do the ESL thing again i'll try a different country next. Not in Northeast Asia.
I have a feeling that some interesting things are gonna happen at my job this week hahahahaha |

Good luck, but don't be surprised if you start itching to come back (and there is no shame in that, either).
I think you might've stayed had you not gotten the hakwon from hell, and unfortunately, those f-wons exist.
Also don't be surprised if things that never bothered you about the U.S. before start to, like fat people, bad public transportation, fat people, high cost of living, fat people... |

Maybe I misread but I didn't see him complain about the flaws in Korean society. He didn't like the hagwon system, what he saw of it. His criticism was not out of the ordinary and the flaws we all recognize.

Isn't that what he's doing? He's not doing a midnight run. He's not cutting the electric cables off all his appliances. He tendered his resignation with his boss and he's going where his skills are appreciated.

So you're blessed by god because you're not a Korea hater but its okay now to turn around and be a Canada hater? You're better than that. |

That's what I love the most about Korea.
The quitters.
It just makes it that much easier for those of us who can deal with cultural differences, less than ideal job conditions, etc.
Just remember OP, wherever you go, there you are. |
What a douchebag comment that is...... Stereotypical Dave's ESL Cafe material.
Are you jealous that i'm leaving? It's okay. I'll send you a postcard. |
We know the truth, don't we OP? You've swung back and forth more than a grandfather clock.
You'll find that your next job, and the job after that, will have hurdles as well. You'll learn that the world isn't built for your needs.
I'm predicting you will soon learn that in fact, it isn't easy or even possible to save the kind of money you were saving here.
I'm also predicting that in about a month, you're going to say to yourself, things really weren't that bad in your job, and why did I let things get so bad in your mind?
I'll give you credit for not pulling a runner though, even though you seriously considered it.
Please enlighten us on your next destination. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. |
You are out of touch with reality. You are assuming things about me, and as far as I know we have never met have we? To enlighten you, I have worked in many different industries and have been constantly working, working, working since 1996. I am very savvy to what jobs in the US are all about.
And things are bad for me here. My hagwon is falling apart. Teachers are getting fired, enrollment is way down, the students can tell things are sour there, and the whole vibe there truely is awful. The tension and depressing vibes in the teachers room everyday are intense.
My life outside of work is great. But my job is just awful. It has turned out to be a stereotypical bad hagwon.
If you have chosen to spend a big chunk of your life in Korea, right on. But don't hate on me for moving on to other things. Your posts reek of bitterness, jealousy and helplessness. But from reading your posts, you do seem like one of those guys who doesn't like Korea, yet stays here for the long term just for a steady paycheck.
Blase, you are a douchebag and a hater. You can quote me on that |

It's a sad commentary that this is a common motif here on Dave's. User announces he's moving on to greener pastures and then the hate brigade comes out. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. You'll be back! Etc. Geez. |

Indeed. It's almost as if some people receive a throbbing erection at the mere notion of others' failure.
Classy stuff. |

Failure is relative. Many people leaving Korea are succeeding by doing so (not getting in the "this ain't horrible, but not good" rut). |

I hope the OP succeeds. Things are getting tough back home, and despite the hardships, Korea might not be such a bad place after all. I wonder with all the job losses and depression if the ol "I'm leaving for a beeter gig back home..." will fall into disuse? At this place in time I think that anyone claiming to have turned down a $50,000 gig to come here and teach will be laughed out the door. |

Should've went with a public school... My job is pretty kush. 20 classes a week, same lesson every class, 2 high school academies, and the list goes on and on.
Aren't you the guy that was complaining about people being disgusted at your tattoos? Not that it's relevant. Just wondering. |

I think what people want to know is which US city is great to repatriate to and what sort of good job would you go into after Korea. |

I think my tone was more directed at some of his comments on other threads to the tune of 'we shouldn't complain'. Then he decides to turn tail because he's the victim of some of the very things that we complain about the most. Now watch him fail to heed our advice that he should just pull a runner the weekend after pay-day and get screwed out of his last month's salary.
I choose my battles very carefully but if I'm faced with BS I do something about it and have little regard for Koreans' 'pride'/ 'face' / 'feelings' if they don't deserve to have them saved. I'm guessing that if he had stood up for himself properly when first confronted with such rubbish he wouldn't have got so much more of it.
As for Canada, it's a nice place to visit, but no place to work if you can't be bothered to worry about whether you're 'offensive' to anyone. |

You're a highly reasonable person. Your comments previous to this struck me as odd and out of character. |

I think what YBS was doing was examining the OP's statement in the context of his previous posts. To fully do that, one must realize that the OP was the same person who:
1. chastised people for complaining about Korea BEFORE ever coming to Korea.
2. A few months later, now in Korea, began to get a nasty case of culture shock and posted a thread complaining about life in Korea and contemplating pulling a runner.
3. 3 weeks after that had a sudden change of heart and posted a thread talking about how wonderful life in Korea was and telling people to stop complaining. This is the infamous "veterans" thread, where the OP specifically called out board veterans as being whiny malcontents who were bad influences.
4. Is now fed up with many of the same problems that he criticized others for complaining about and is planning to take off.
All of this happened in the course of the last few months.
So I don't think YBS was out of line in taking a few parting shots at the OP. Highly appropriate in my opinion. |
