I've started working with two other guys in an acoustic trio format. Assuming the perfomers had modest skills, what tunes would bring you a bit of joy to hear and make you almost forget you're drinking Hite?
Cheers! |

Is there a lack of original music performances here? I admit, there's not a lot of good places to see music played where we live so I don't get out much. We all have a locker full of originals waiting to be played but have been working on covers to get things rolling, although several covers have a great amount of creative liberties applied to them. |

i'm ok with cover songs as long as they're a part of a set of originals. when i see a band, i like to get a sense of their own style. playing CDs is much cheaper and sounds better than cover bands. besides, nobody ever got anywhere in the music scene playing cover songs. |

Weird Al did, more or less. There's some relatively successful impersonators out there who are standing on the shoulders of giants like Elvis and ABBA (odd that those two came up in the same sentence).
Loads of smaller bar bands make their living off playing covers. Sure they never "make it", but they're more successful in bars where everyone is drunk, has negligible attention span and just wants to hear something recognizable. |

ok, weird al is the ONLY guy who ever 'made it' playing covers. sort of. he changes the lyrics at least.
you're right, a bar band can make money playing covers. but why not teach a few private lessons a week if you need the cash? sorry, but people who come here and play in a cover band to make money are pathetic. play music because you love it, not because you can make a few man wons on the weekend! |

I agree about loving what you play. That's where the rub comes in, do you want to play your favorite Beat Farmers tune or something people will know? Many times people listening to bands just aren't that tuned in and appreciate things within their comfort zone.
Jandar's list was amazing. There are so many tunes I've put deep away. The Youtube session was a good trip in the way-back machine Mr. Wizard. |

I gotta say cover/tribute bands suck. Write your own stuff. Most cover bands cover some crap band anyways. I don't see anything with throwing in a cover song out of respect for some band. Punk bands do it alot. The are always throwing in a Ramones tune. But to dedicate your time/talent to doing someone elses crap is pointless. I guess if you sing opera then it might be ok. But to stand there and listen to someone do Nickelback songs all night makes me want to stick ice picks in my ears. |

Are you kidding? Opera kicks nickelbacks' collective ass. |
