Hey there, I've got a question for Canadians who've recently applied for an E-2 visa: Do you absolutely need a 'certified criminal record check' from the RCMP, or is a 'Canadian police certificate' from your local police force good enough? Seems like the former takes at least 120 days to process, while the latter is relatively easy and quick. Thanks for any helpful input.

I'm two-and-a-half years into this job, but when I signed on, I asked the same question to my supervising professor, and when I explained the time differential between RCMP and municipal checks, she told me that the municipal one would suffice (ultimately a lot of departments here wouldn't know the difference anyway, though this may have changed since then).

It's just another hoop we had to jump through to make certain officials seem like they're doing their job. I would get an RCMP check if I had to, though.

Just in case anyone is curious, the 'Canadian Police Certificate' is good enough (but it must include a 'vulnerable sector search'), I didn't need the lengthy RCMP check. My local police wouldn't do it, so I used a company that does fingerprinting and criminal checks (about 40$, and it took less than a week). They said I would need to get it notarized before I showed it to the Korean consulate, but the notary I went to said it was official enough and didn't need notarizing. I brought the CPC and my passport to the consulate, and it was stamped with some Korean official stuff, for 2.20$. Easy peasy. I can't wait to get back to Korea just in time for the complete collapse of the Korean economy. Yaaay!

I just renewed my E-2 visa and provided them with just a local search. The current immigration policy says that they will accept any check as long as it is done by a police authorty and has an official seal. I was told that I would have to bring it to the consulate and have it notarized since I had to have it sent here from home but I brought it to immigration as is and they accepted it no problem. The only person who told me that I had to have the vulnerable sector search done was the biatch at my local police station. All immigration cares about is piece of paper that says you have no criminal history and the people at immigration get so many different CRCs that are all in English that they have no idea what is the real deal and what isn't. Your best bet is to contact the local immigration office and ask them what it is exactly that they want, and if they just give you a web address tell them that you want specifics because the website is never updated.

I just got my E-2 last month and I had a local police check (Niagara region). Just make sure you include the vulnerable sector search.

but again, I didn't get the vulnerable search, no problems with a regular one for me.

The RCMP (120 day) criminal record check doesn't include a Vulnerable Sector Screening. They do not do the Vulnerable Sector Screening. Don't ask me why not. I already asked them and they couldn't provide me with a good answer. My local police, the Winnipeg Police, did the criminal record check with the Vulnerable Sector Screening for 10 bucks less and it only took 2 weeks.
