Neil, from Maple Ridge, B.C., is already serving a three year and three month jail sentence in Thailand after he pleaded guilty last May to sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy.

The new trial, in which Neil has pleaded not guilty, involves the younger brother of the 13-year-old victim. The charges include sexually abusing a minor, videotaping the alleged abuse, taking a child without parental consent, and holding him against his will.

The child, who was nine at the time, claims Neil paid him to perform oral sex in 2003.

If convicted, Neil faces up to 20 years in prison.

However, journalist Dean Adams said a guilty verdict will likely carry a similar sentence to Neil's last conviction.

"It's really up to the judge in the case," Adams told CTV's Canada AM on Tuesday from Bangkok.

He said the case is expected to continue for the rest of the week.

"We should have some results on Friday as to what convictions might arise out of all of the proceedings this week," Adams said.

Neil was arrested in Thailand on Oct. 19, 2007, after the international police agency Interpol unscrambled swirled digital images from about 200 Internet photos, which allegedly show Neil engaging in sexual acts with young boys.

Hundreds of tips were received and Neil was arrested 11 days after the Interpol appeal was launched.

Neil admitted through his translator that he took the photos but said he did not post the pictures online.

During Neil's last trial, the victim, now 18, testified he went to Neil's apartment in Bangkok where the crime was committed.

Photos that allegedly showed Neil engaging in sexual acts and playing with naked or partially clothed young boys were also presented at the trial.

In Thailand pleading not-guilty usually results in a maximum sentence. With all of the evidence suggesting multiple crimes I would be surprised if he got anything less than twenty more years.

I'm hoping so. I also don't want him transferred to Canada just so they can try out that new law. I say let him serve his time in a Thai prison and then be charged again in Canada.

There is an interesting program, "Real Crime-The Hunt for Mr. Swirl", that was posted on a few torrent sites lately. It was aired on British TV on October 6, and traces the investigation and capture of CPN. It features interviews with people who knew him, including a (former?) poster on this site who was instrumental in identifying him to Interpol. The show even features a brief shot of the Dave's ESL Cafe banner. I watched it yesterday...quite interesting.

Real Crime comes up with yet another admirably neat encapsulation of a complicated case
as it tracks the flight and capture of the world's most wanted paedophile.

Interpol took the unprecedented step of launching a global public appeal for information after
Canadian Christopher Neil published pictures of himself on the internet abusing children.
Neil had camouflaged his face using editing software, making his features vanish into a swirl
pattern. But he was quickly identified by Interpol experts who immediately began a manhunt.

The detective who led the inquiry says of Neil's decision to publish pictures of himself
committing abuse, "It's a badge of honour [among other paedophiles] ... your stock in the
community goes up."

The programme interviews Neil's brother, the woman who worked with Neil when they both
taught in South Korea (she identified his unscrambled photograph) and Neil's transvestite
boyfriend, who was with him when he was arrested in Thailand.
