Giving standardized tests to third graders? Give me a break.
I'm not a huge fan of the old timer Korean SMOE teachers but I think the teacher's union is well within its rights when it comes to the meaningless spectacle of giving competitive testing to 8 year old kids.
Typical autocratic Korean top down fiat-style management.
"Test the 8 year olds!" "All teachers WILL teach in English in five years!"
God forbid anyone acknowledges the limitations of an institution or piece of policy in this country. Just keep ramming it through with stupid slogans and a delusional 'can do' attitude. And then write shitty op eds later. |

F-ing teachers union.
They are opposed to it because these test results are going to show just how inept Korean teachers are.
Here's an idea for the Korea education system. Its called "failing". Yes, failing is embarrassing for the student and the parents. That's why is is an effective motivator to make sure kids pass.
You don't want your kid to fail, then make sure they pay attention in class and listen to the teacher. |

The KTEWU abhors how the tests reveal which schools, and even which teachers, have been ineffective in educating their students. This is why the KTEWU has opposed steps to evaluate teachers performances.
...
But what about those students who suffer under lazy teachers? |
One question I have; How bad are Korean teachers in Korean Public Schools? |

I cannot imagine any teacher union in North America suggesting students violate a basic value of learning. Geez. |

Varies greatly. I've seen some of this competition first hand, both in busan and seoul. Tons of unrealistic demo lessons in busan and redistribution of traditionally seniority based bonuses in seoul. Neither one seems to improve teaching skill. Competition among teachers mostly just results in awkward situations. |

Even if what you said were true, surely there are much better ways to protest than to spit on everything that a true teacher ought to stand for. |

This is Korea. It's all ceremony and spectacle. No one is spitting on anything. |

They have them in Canada and the US...
Though in the US they dropped portions of the test in certain states (especially the geography section) because so many kids were failing... |
