Where can I buy good US Beef?

They're about a 10-15 minute walk southwest of Jamsil Hospital, just past the KFC. There will be several places with red, white, and blue signs saying "미국산소고기" or "USA Beef" along the road. There's also several buses (3314, 3417, 363) that go there from 종합운동장 (Sports Complex). I believe the name of the stop is 강동송파등기소 (Kangdong, Songpa Registry Office).


Has anyone followed up on these tips?

I really think the importance of this thread is decreasing. I checked out 4 butcher shops around my house and 3 of them are selling at least one cut of US beef. The shops are wising up, it's getting pretty easy to find. All you have to do is look at one of the signs next to a cut of beef and if it says 미국산, then it's American. Or just walk in to a shop and ask the butcher, "Mi guk san so gogi, isseoyo?" If he says no, check another one. No need to travel halfway across town.

If you really want another one most people here (in Seoul) can find, there's one in Haebangchon I just saw the other day. It's just up from Jakoby's Burgers. But like I said, if you're nowhere near HBC, just look around your neighbourhood or the nearest market and you'll find US beef.

Yeah, I'm going to have to get on buying US beef. I'm pretty sure it's not available anywhere near where I live. I'll do some checking at some butcher shops, but... I've been buying Australian ribeye at E-Mart and it's pretty expensive. I'm pretty sure it's grade A. 5480 Won/100 g. Pretty sick since the last one I bought was 1.032 kilos. The next closest place I know of that sells Australian is Lotte Mart. Three or four stops from my place. The rib eye there is 3450 Won/100 g. I don't know why the prices between Lotte and E-Mart differ so much. I thought that the beef at Lotte was grade A. Something seems strange about it and I'll have to confirm it they're the same grade or not. E-Mart could be ripping people off. Again, this is ribeye.

Anyway, I should start buying US beef. I'll probably check out HBC since I got there often. I could stock up. I live in Gangdong (line 5).

On another note, Korean beef seems to have skyrocketted in price (along with a lot of other things). I've seen ribeye at 6000 Won/100 g and up. Maybe aroudn 8000 in Gangnam. Crazy. I'm crazy for buying that 50 plus thousand Won steak. And it was Australian. What's going on with price differences with the same-country dealie??????

Late this afternoon I re-visited the large butcher shop at Noryangjin Station Fish Market (described on page 7 of this thread). Nice place. The best thing about this butcher shop is that there's plenty of variety AND the prices are VERY low. However, it does get crowded.

It's in the Fish Market next to Noryangjin Station. Very detailed directions were posted on page 7 of this thread.

-Immediately upon doing so, you will see a bank that might be obstructed by vendors' umbrellas so look carefully. First it says "Authorized Foreign Exchange Bank" and then you will see Suhyup Bank.
-A little down the street and on the left (about across from the bank) is a the building (past the 3 phone booths on your right). There is a sign that says "US Meat Export Federation." The sign is not huge so look closely.


-The name of the store is 고기스토아.
-The address of the building is 159-5 노들길.
-The phone number is 822-5500 (the banner covered any possible area code). Does anyone know the proper area code?

Oh, and another nice thing about this place is that the plastic bags, at the checkout, have the "US Meat Export Federation" written on the side with an American flag, too.
Plus the receipt is itemized- in Korean. That is PERFECT for showing Koreans the prices of American beef. That'll win more converts. Wink

The store by Noryangjin Station doesn't chop it as thick as the store by Sinchon Station Crying or Very sad . I like thick stakes, but the prices are higher there than at the store by Noryangjin Station.

What are some good cuts of beef? I'm on A-meat.com but I'm not sure what to order. The tenderloin looks really good, so does the boneless short rib meat. My Korean friend is going to order for me but I need to know quickly because we have class in 20 minutes. Thanks. The tenderloin is 30,000 for 1kg. She said at the butcher shop on Jeju is is 55,000W for A+ Korean beef. That's insane.
