Chavez calls `Comrade Bush` a socialist
Posted: 2008/10/09
George Bush has been the target of fresh jibes by Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez for doing exactly what he was criticising the socialist leader for overriding market laws to protect the economy.
Critics say the U.S. bailout plan is an example of a double standard by the Bush administration, reports Americas McClatchy newspaper.
"If the Venezuelan government, for example, approves a law to protect consumers, they say, 'Take notice, Chavez is a tyrant!'" said Chavez, speaking in one of his recent weekly television shows.
"Or they say, 'Chavez is regulating prices. He is violating the laws of the marketplace.' How many times have they criticised me for nationalising the phone company? They say, 'The state shouldn't get involved in that.' But now they don't criticize Bush for having to nationalise (the biggest banks in the world.) Comrade Bush, how are you?"
Warming to his theme, he added: "Comrade Bush is heading toward socialism."
Nicaragua Congressman Edwin Castro agreed: "We think the Bush administration should follow the same policies that they and the International Monetary Fund have always told us to follow when we have economic problems a structural adjustment that requires cutting government spending and reducing the role of government.
Meanwhile, Bush said the bailout plan, that will see $700 billion of government money used to buy toxic mortgages, was necessary, although he said it stood against his personal philosophy. |

Bush is a corporatist. But nevermind that. Hugo is pretty much right this time.
I'm glad someone can take glee in our misfortune. I say that in all seriousness. People might as well laugh at others' misfortune, there's no reason for the whole world to be dour and sombre. Of course, there's the nagging question of just how expansive that misfortune could be . . . our misfortune could be everyone's misfortune . . . |

Bush is a socialist.
Chavez is still evil and destroying his nation's future.
It's a big club. |

To debate which ism Bush is misses the point. He isn't very good at any of them. |

It's like Gore Vidal said: Socialism for the rich, "free enterprise" for the poor. |

Bush is like Castro? Or is Chavez like Castro? Who's a Communofascist exactly?
This is getting complicated. I gotta go with Ya-Ta Boy, the common denominator here is incompetence. |

I believe the concept for that is "totalitarian." So W. Bush is a totalitarian, then?
Hmm. W. Bush is the evil antichrist, who walks among us as a totalitarian Communofascist, and who destroys entire cities via hurricanes -- possibly soon to be replaced by S. Palin, I imagine. Interesting times.
Thank God the world can rely on cool-headed leadership such as H. Chavez to draw our attention to and then explain these things. |

Those are not all my characterizations, but you did forget "Puppet-in-Chief."

From just where do you get your crazy ideas, even in sarcasm? He is up there with the others, too.
Did you know there is now a law in Cuba under which if a Cuban criticizes Venezuela, even if he has never left the island, he can be brought to and prosecuted in Venezuela? (I think it works the other way as well but don't quote me on that.)
I suppose it is one way off that hellhole of an island. |

Excellent, Bacasper. I do see that, whereever else we may disagree, you at least do not do that thing where your attacks against the United States lead you to romanticize and hero-worship those foreign leaders who also attack the United States (H. Chavez, et al.) And my sarcasm, above, was not directed against you at all, by the way. Just used your quote as a jumping-off point directed against no one in particular. |
