That is right, Mises: I identify with a nation-state. Forlorn. Woe. I do not embrace "the rest of the world's" "citizen of the world" mantra -- and I doubt "the rest of the world" does so, either, especially with respect to passports, visas, customs, taxes, and job applications, etc., but let us set that nonsense aside for the moment.

My family and I have reasons and justifications for doing so in the United States. And I do not need explain myself to you.

Who said this was bad? What the hell are you projecting on me?

Neither do I. Joo said American voters shouldn't care about what the world believe and I said they should. They shouldn't make this their primary concern, but part of a wider basket of facts that informs their decision. And then you got into a dither.

I didn't ask you to. Who asked you anything about you?

Relax and reread what you wrote. You objected to my using the first-person plural. You are offbase here. I get to use it in that context.

Joo: I knew Chileans who kept the 9/11 attacks on their computers, watched them again and again to relive that day, and one of them, a teacher, even sent them to high-school-aged American exchange students there as email attachments. One of these American exchange students asked me how he should respond to it. I advised him to ignore it. He did.

Your point stands, of course: who cares what "the rest of the world" thinks re: American politics when "the rest of the world" is so hateful re: America? Not me. Not several justices on the Supreme Court, either, for that matter -- a forum where such issues have recently arisen.

You accused me of using a simplistic construction of "America" when I apparently should have used the Bush administration and I just tossed it back that you were using "we" to refer to the success of world war 2 when you should have said the Roosevelt administration. But I suppose you will want to argue about this too.

Although Americans do take into consideration the opinions of the rest of the world;

The rule is:

One taxpayer, one vote.

It's my observation that when people have the respect of others, they are happy to admit that what others think of them is important. Conversely, when someone doesn't have the respect of others, then other people's opinion is just worthless crap.

Exactly. And, cheap propaganda points notwithstanding, not a very helpful one when it comes to apprehending and evaluating world affairs as an adult.

Quote:
The United States does not "have power over" "the rest of the world." This is silly. And yes, Joo is right: Americans ought to leave this "rest of the world" nonsense where they found it. For one thing, I doubt anyone out there in "the rest of the world" feels anything but pure malice towards the United States, its favorite scapegoat,[sic] since Graham Greene,[sic] if not earlier.

What does "hegemon" mean, then, when you poll the board as to whether China will become a hegemon?

Quote:
Therefore I would not trust any of them one iota with respect to Americans' debating other Americans re: what is best for America today.

If you want Americans debating Americans, why are you here?

Disclaimer: Not to drive you off, but I'm just curious why you, with the serious foreign policy chops, choose to hang with a bunch of English teachers.

Quote:
I look forward to you quoting just one sentence of this reply and responding to maybe half of that sentence. Your form of debate is disingenuous.

Come now. When Goph does choose to respond to points, he tells people to read books as opposed to saying what the books he's read say.

It's about chops.

Coming from the man, who branded all Europeans as smug and elitist, this is rich.

I'd watch out. Have you ever heard of the GRE?

Jesus dude. You are wound tighter than a spring tonight.

C'mon. Michael Moore's candidate is in the driving seat. Not that he's bad, BUT IT'S MICHAEL MOORE. This is casus belli!

Nice. New question for Supreme Court candidates...

I know they're a bunch of conservatives, but why exactly would you cite Supreme Court justices to back up your spite for "the world"? Have any of them said anything "anti-world" or even "anti-UN"?

Oh, but wait...

Are you citing Supreme Court justices because the remnants of the rubber-stamp Bush Congress you voted for are about to be shown the door?

Oh yes. I see.

Anyway, let's get back to the Americans debating Americans:

Quote:

yesh, the world (hoo hates us) will no know end to theer trubbles if they releeect Jimy cartr. He dupposed the Show. The Show must go on!
