|
|
Right now Korea is becoming less and less profitable. Lots of people are leaving. Lots of people are brainstorming about other jobs they could apply for. I am literally packing my bags right now.
I am going to go back to America to pursue a few opportunites there. They are good opportunites, but i'm definantly taking a risk. In the future, if I find myself stuck in a rut and without a job, I might do the ESL thing again.
I do NOT want to come back to Korea though. Been there, done that. I milked that cow until the milk turned sour.
So my question is, in what other countries some money be saved? Even if it's not big money, even if you're just coming out a little bit ahead, where are the spots that are a little more lucrative than others?
Obviously there is Japan. And Saudi Arabia for people who are qualified to teach there. But I do not think I could get hired in Saudi. Lots of people go to China too, it looks like China is even starting to pay for plane tickets. But where else is good?
Really, I don't want to come back to North Asia at all. China, Japan, Korea, no thank you. But that's just my own personal taste.
Some other posters here were wondering about other countries to teach ESL too. Let's hear them |

Have some friends in Tailand. They say its basically as profitable as Korea. And the standard of living is much lower. |

Taiwan. It's used to waiting out storms and typhoons of any kind so it may be a good choice right now. The pay there is usually decent plus a low cost of living so you can save a nice chunk of change. Down side: schools don't cover apartments and transportation so you spend a large amount for an apartment and scooter. Yes, in Taiwan, a scooter is a must. |

Ok well I don't really understand why you have written off Japan. Japan is wicked and you can save - work in the sticks and do some privates. As you know you own your own visa in Japan.
Forget about Thailand as an ESL teacher. You would get Max 35K(Baht) a month. Don't know how the poster above reckons it's as good as Korea(money wise). Total BS. |

I said this in another thread. Theyre super rich in those countries.
Consider Libya. They take you with much less qualifications than the other Arabic countries and the deal turds all over Korea in every respect.
It is not completely 'dry' either, you can get weed easily and from my experience the people are very, very friendly. Also, Colonel Gaddaffi has it the crime rate locked down! |

it would make sense the middle east is the place to be now for esl teachers because it's the next place that's opening up to the world.
i would jump on it like white on rice especially if they offer a high income, villa and a CAR! Plus, how does someone even get a chance to live in the middle-east. Maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you don't like it or feel unsafe, you can alway quit and leave. |

But they often list that they require a Masters Degree for prospective teachers.
I would love to go there and mop up the cash for a while. But I only have a bachelors degree and less than a year of TESL experience. I guess I could apply and see what happens though. |

It seems like they'd be difficult to work for in the Middle East. I would reckon they have higher standards of teaching and many more rules than Asian countries. If you can do it, go for a year or two to stack some cash. I suspect 10 years would buy you a nice financial position. It would be a way to pay off student loan debt and buy a modest house or rental house investment at home in 2 years time and secure your retirement with 10 years work. That's very attractive to go back to school for, but living in the Middle East is not fun due to severe rules, laws, and restrictions.
I think the way to break into that is have 2 years experience + an MA in TESL. It's a gamble as you don't know what the market's doing after going to school for a couple years as these are quickly changing times we live in. You don't want to be like the fresh MBA grad who can't get a job that adequately pays. It's tricky today. |

This has nothing to do with English...other than speaking it, I'm planning to go to New Zealand. As long as their dollar stays down (relatively, although these days it's not looking good) and their housing prices aren't as insane as other countries (they seem reasonable at the moment) and that fantastic landscape of thier's doesn't sink into the sea (doubful), then NZ, the south Island to be exact, is where I would like to go, live, work and rasie a family with trips to Aus and South East Asia for my holidays.
Sounds like paradise to me and I don't see why an educated guy such as myself won't be employable, so I'm not fretting about the cash flow. |

That is what I plan on doing in the U.S. There are plenty of beautiful and safe cities in America and I should be able to make a good living, especially if i'm willing to move to the jobs. I just hope McCain and that idiot Palin don't get into the White House.
And for foreign travel, there's Central America, South America and the Caribean. The U.S. is a really good place to be all things considered. |
