I went to Club Mass last night for their 1 year "birthday party" to see perhaps the best electronic music DJ/producer team LCD Soundsystem. They were awesome. Spinning funky disco stuff, and throwing in whatever else they just felt like at the moment, brewing up quite an impressive show that got people really into it, dancing hard deep into the morning. Good work on that front.

However, the place that hosted them really shocked me. Club Mass. This place defines everything that is wrong with a club. Here's why:

My friends and I bought tickets in advance. We expected that since we bought them in advance, we would be let into the club hassle free, treated as VIPs, since we ALREADY paid. But no. This was not the case. Instead, they made all the people who had ALREADY PAID line up outside! To add insult to the shock, they would let people who DIDN'T PAY, who hadn't bought tickets in advance, right on through the doors!!! That's right. People who PAID didn't get in, people who didn't pay, got in!! Seems backwards doesn't it? Isn't it the other way around??? Anyways, we stood outside for almost an hour, wondering if we'd get in. Finally they let us in, but there were others waiting behind us outside for who knows how long. I wonder if everyone got in?

The reason they did this, I think, is for looks, for image. Having a line-up outside your establishment makes it look popular, wanted, cool. Rather than line-up people who hadn't paid, they just let them through, in fear maybe they'd go to another club. The theory is, since the ticket holders paid, they aren't going anywhere. This created a very angry line-up, many people pushing around to get in, and them having to actually shut doors on the people outside. Talk about anarchy, unorganized stupidity. Bad vibes before a show starts. Not what I like.

People on here have complained about M2 and stuff, but this really takes first prize in illogical harsh, outright rude treatment of paying guests. Shame on Mass!

So, let your money do the talking, and GO ELSEWHERE from now on. That's the BEST way to send the message to the owner about improving customer service.

There are people, on this site and others, who complain about bars/clubs/restaurants, but STILL go to the rotten places and spend money. What message does that send?

Yeah, but the stupid thing was they didn't even have roped off lines, so there was a mosh pit of nonsense at 1am, all kinds of pushing and shoving to get in.

The set was alright...wouldn't say they're the best dj/producers ever though. That's a bold statement, my friend.

yeah it looked pretty chaotic. i've seen shit like that happen at clubs in england. u buy a ticket and then they make u line up like a tool. annoying.

i went in early, got a stamp and came back before they were due to go on. walked straight past all the chaos. i talked to a couple of guys who snuck in for free. i talked briefly to the manager and think she said she's the new manager, maybe that's the problem....

thought it was a good night though.

Yeah the music was great, but the only time I'll go to those big clubs like Mass or Volume is if there's a good touring act booked (so 'taking our business elsewhere' isn't really an option, wylies). Another problem with the club was that the whole place was packed but they had 3 separate "VIP" areas that were basically empty. Never seen a club with 3 VIP areas. Nuts. And you'd think for an anniversary party they'd at least open one of those up.

I was waiting outside too. It just seemed a bit of a joke to be honest. Plus once you got in there was no room to dance. The tunes were great but everything else was terrible. I left early.
Outside i saw two foreign guys fighting with the bouncers. The bouncers got sticks from their cars and the foreigners hid in a Buy the Way. It was surreal.
The whole night had a weird vibe for me.

I was part of the massive crush outside just after 1 - rather than dealing with the problem, they seemed to encourage it - If you push to the front, they let you in. Great. Got a bit hairy at times. It seems they didn't expect people to actually come. I used to moan about the 'queing culture' back home in England - never again.

Had a good night, but I agree, felt strange in some way.

I was there too. Me, my girlfriend, and our friend walked edgeways to the door. They let in my GF and friend, and were about to lock me out, but I just shouted that I'd already paid and slid by.

It was fucking ridiculous. My other friend had vip'ed for 12 people and they wouldn't let him in.

I think I'm done with big name club acts in Korea. I also went to Justice which, though organized, was purposely oversold. Absolutely no room to dance for the 1st 1.5 hours of the show, and unbearably hot.

What's worse is that Koreans don't fucking seem to understand the point of dance clubs. Ok, a big name is there, take a pic or two, and start dancing. Don't hold up your fucking phone to take video: dance or get an elbow to the ribs courtesy of jdog2050.

Totally agree with you. I like to have a bit of room to strut my thang when i'm listening to dance music. I don't want to stare at the DJ all night. Especially when the DJ is an overweight male.
Not being able to dance, at a dance club, while listening to dance music.
I think i'm going to give the big name DJ events a miss from now on.

You say that as if these people go to the show FOR the show. They go to the show so they can take pictures and video and then put it on their Cyworld pages. How else are they going to prove to their friends and loved ones how cool they are?

I went to Mess sorry Mass a few months ago, what a disgrace.

When I heard LCD were in Seoul I was definitely going to their show but when my friend told me they were playing at Mess I was definitely not going to their show.

When I went, all the foreigners were made to wait outside and then we all got IDed, they wanted passports but I only had an alien reg card which they decided they would accept after about 10 minutes. It was a really nice entrance, I felt so welcome and knew I was going to have a good night.

My mate set up a tab at the bar which proved virtually impossible to get a drink from, the bar tenders dont simile and dont understand English or Korean. It took me ages to get drinks from this miserable little wretch who had to be given a piece of paper with the names of our drinks written in Korean. I swear a smile would have killed her. It was a real accomplishment to see the drinks eventually surface and sweetened by the thought that they were three times as expensive as they would be anywhere else in Seoul.

My girlfriend and I also found ourselves incessantly pushed around by the fat insufferable bouncers (chumps) from places where we would be standing drinking our drinks. This happened several times to us and others, they seemed to enjoy it. Dont stand near the bar, dont stand near the entrance, dont stand near the dance floor, dont stand in a 10 meter radius of the entrance to the empty VIP room. (Bangbayed, I thought the same thing when I was there, 3 empty useless VIP rooms, is it really necessary?)

Near the end of the night a group us were in the cloak room, I thought we had outwitted the fat insufferable chumps but before we knew it, they trundled in giving it more attitude and we were told to move on, someone told them to f*** off and they went straight for the nearest white man they could find, me. I was dragged out the place by two of them called a son of b**** and literally kicked out onto the pavement, where I rolled into a group of people having a few drinks outside. They mentioned that I wasnt the first foreigner to get Mess Kicked.

My friends eventually rejoined me before the friend who had set up the bar tab realized he needed to get his bank card from the miserable little wretch. The fat chumps decided to bar him from returning as a punishment for his association with me. It took my girlfriend about an hour to get his bank card back.

The place is a hole.

Eff 'em. I mean, it is so Korean. Make the VIPs wait outside because you know that they've already paid and you've got that money in the bank. But give precedence to customers who haven't paid yet and might go elsewhere. Very Happy Smile
