I work in an all boys, public, middle school and am curious as to who you think are the most 'brutal' disciplinarians among the Korean teachers - the males or the females?
I vote female because, while they may not physically discipline the students as often as the males, when they do they seem to 'loose it' more often. At my school there's one in particular who goes 'psycho' every once and a while and lays 'love stick' beatings on the kids that make even me wince. |

What I've noticed working at an all boys school and an all girls school,
In an all boys school, boys treat all teachers like crap, but the stricter the teacher, the better your class goes. But, it's usually the strict women teachers that loose it and go all out, with their love stick, wacking a kid that's double her size. And 99% of the time the boys can take it without complaining much. The male teachers can go overboard too, but you usually notice when the females flip out.
In an all girls school, generally the girls get away with alot with the male teachers and girls generally are better behaved with male teachers. But, it's the female teachers the girls like giving crap too. So, what I've usually seen it's the female teacher that go overboard on girls. Girls students also tend to hold a grudge longer against a female teacher, which can sometimes turn to pure hatred.
And just an additional observation, girl students are generally much meaner to an outcast girl student, then say boys are to outcast boys. Girls are at times out right vicious with their own gender. |

I think it translates as "outsider" or "social pariah". The kid with no friends who is often the butt of jokes. |

My students have made female teachers cry. The only time they listen to Korean teachers is when they are about to "lose it." When they calm down, the students start back up again.
Beautiful teachers that the students have crushes on usually have it easier (maybe that's because I can't tell if students say inappropriate things to them or not).
I wonder how much gender roles also play into this. |

Corporal punishment is not allowed at our school - and it never has. However, this doesn't stop teachers from making the students do various embarrassing things. My impression is that the female teachers are generally more feared by the students, though this obviously varies widely by individual. |
