so I'm walking down the street - or up the hill, depending on your perspective, sidewalks jammed as usual which is why I'm in the street - this other westerner female pushing a baby carriage comes towards me so I'm pretty close to the cars parked on the curb so I stand even closer, she keeps coming at me - ! so I stand still giving her plenty of opportunity to go around - B*TCH KEEPS COMING AND STARTS TO RUN OVER ME WITH HER FREAKIN' BABY CARRIAGE.
I gently push it OFF MY FEET WHICH IS WHERE IT IS NOW and say WTF ?? her male companion/partner/whatever comes up from behind - didn't even see him before and nearly grabs my arm - I brush him off with a "get your hands off of me" as he's like "careful it's a baby" and I'm like
WHAT THE F*CK???!! why was she just aiming to run over me with her baby carriage?? what was that about????
the landscape has definitely changed and I couldn't quite put my finger on it before then......
I........
slowly.........
............ realized
all this me me me attitude - all this "nose in the air I don't speak to other westeners, not to say Hello, Hi, a simple meeting of the eyes in the street" we are talking ATTITUDE here
OMG - why didn't I realize it before - because when I left nyc behind in 2002, headed for greener pastures and a year later came to K - I literally put it out of my mind those incredibly obnoxious, self-serving, incredibly phony, superficial-to-a-hilt people who cannot, will not, do not ever, EVER do anything for anyone that does not directly, and I mean this as literally as it sounds, benefit themselves first and foremost!!!
and they are EVERYWHERE - trust funds probably bankrupted, jobs scarce back home, couldn't abide by the rules in place which help society get along, what better place for a warped narcissist who cares more about the brand of tv they have in their home than the quality of programs being broadcast - than this superficial peacock-preening nest of similar like-minded people here in Korea?
I can't believe I didn't get it before - so silly of me - ha ha ha ha - well the joke's on me for sure -
so to those of you who wonder why the other foreign teacher takes all the crap off your hakwon boss - or why they think they are K's answer to the perfect teacher yet have never stepped in a classroom before (YaTa's recent revelation about a newcomer in his school comes to mind) - this is why -
THE YUPPIES ARE HERE AND THEY ARE ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR THEIRSELVES SO BEWARE
they'll pretend like they are "cool" and "hey man let's go have a brew"
but don't fall for it -
you've been warned - not another word from me - that's it, my time is almost done - I just wanted to mark this moment and maybe a few others might have noticed also - yes, that's what it is all right.
oh well. was good while it lasted. there goes the neighborhood! |

My school district has recently had an influx of young, career-minded, upwardly mobile, recently graduated Americans. They're not snobby or rude, but now it seems that discussion at the local pub is now much more about graduate school and investments than holidays in SE Asia and the EPL. I can only imagine that someone who is contracted by our district must be doing a lot of recruiting at American uni campuses. With the recent fall of the won against the dollar, however, I don't expect this trend to continue. |

this is so common with Koreans/Asians; what difference does it make where they are from; it is basically a state-of-mind/manners |

I had a Korean woman push her baby stroller in front of my bicycle once. I was riding along the Han River on the freaking bike lane. She pushed her baby into it without even looking. I came 6 inches from smashing her baby. She didn't even move or attempt to do anything, just another lazy cow wandering around.
Moosehead, you should've told them a dead baby joke. "Why did the dead baby cross the road? I kicked it." Class. |

um..i think the op was referring to a nonkorean yuppie. you know, there are rude and stupid people all over the world, not just koreans. though some things koreans do is ridiculous like running into things which i don't understand yet.
i will ponder on it a bit though and get back to you. i am korean yet i have no desire to run into things and i don't ever recall feeling this way, maybe it's some cultural inside secret.
Also, i've noticed that BACK in america, it was always the rude foreigners that americans took a liking to rather than the actual nice ones because no matter how they suppress themselves, deep inside they are pompous assholes too!! human nature sucks |

I will say this, the rest of my new SMOE group is unusually highly qualified compared to the stereotype of teachers here... |

I know the OP was talking about a foreign woman. But living in a country with 98% Koreans, it's easier to recall events involving Koreans. |

Word is getting around about the money aspect of Korea. Ive spoken to a fair few people who are planning on going there to save money.
Now I'll tell em about the Won and theyll probably change their minds.
The original post was very true though, people are increasingly selfish and ignorant in the West.
I have just read an article in the newspaper saying half of all the Poles that were in the UK have now left as the money here isnt as valuable.
They say everyone is heading for Norway where the minimum wage is 10 an hour. 8 hours a day and you're talking 18,000 a year for doing unskilled, menial labour. Living costs are higher but if youre determined enough Im sure you could save alot there. |

'B*TCH KEEPS COMING AND STARTS TO RUN OVER ME WITH HER FREAKIN' BABY CARRIAGE.'
What are you, a midget? A friend of mine got 'ran over' by a truck but a pram!
Advice
try moving to a pigmy sect, im sure the prams there are below your head height |

I've stopped using the terms "stroller" and "baby carriage" and only call them PRAMS, because I feel that pram is one of the ugliest words in the English language and that it's a fitting word for the hideous, hateful things. |

pram-face is my favourite
'girl who is a little rough around the edges and wouldn't look at all out of place at 14 years of age pushing a newborn through a council estate/trailer park.' |

I'm not that up on her accent, but I think Sarah Palin would pronounce it High School "Pram Queen". |

By the way OP your post is stupid. What is wrong with successful westerners in Korea exactly? Or is it just those with prams? Perhaps you wish to start a proletariat movement on the streets of Seoul... |

Korean yuppie woman in my building was outside a few nights ago holding her groomed, yappy dog and arguing with the "security" guy over her fancy little sportscar (that she regularly parks across two or three spaces to prevent anyone parking near it) getting scratched. The absurb cliched-ness of the situation was particularly poignant. |
