Those of you who live in the area probably already know. But for those who have never been to Pancho's mexican restaurant in Itaewon, don't bother. The food is subpar and the portions are small. But let me tell you why this place really pissed me off.

I went in there yesterday afternoon with my wife and started checking out the menu. One thing that kind of jumped out at me was the price of a Coke. 4,000 won for a f'ing fountain Coke! For some reason, I was craving a Coke though, so I ordered one despite the price gouge. Then I made the mistake of asking for a refill, foolishly assuming that a 4,000 won Coke would come with free refills.

After we finished and went to pay, I was more than a little surprised to see that I was being charged 8,000 won for a Coke with one refill. I complained, thinking the charge ridiculous. I don't think I'm a cheap person by any means, but no one rich or poor should be paying 8,000 won for two Cokes in a below average restaurant! They simply told me that they don't do free refills. So, I simply told them that I'll never be coming back, and that I'll recommend others go elsewhere as well.

So here you go. Pancho's in Itaewon blows.

We walked in, saw the prices, and walked right out. They have some cajones to charge those prices.

BTW, the morons who pay those prices at Panchos, and other restaurants in Itaewon, are fools and they're keeping prices higher for the rest of us.

We were there for the grand opening ten years ago. It sucked back then too. Never been back since.

Many places don't serve up value to match their prices while assuming customers won't lose face by complaining, but will just keep coming back with tolerance.

So in other words you knew exactly how much the coke was before ordering two of them? I have never been given free-refills in any restaurant in Korea, why are you surprised that this place was no different? Because it had a Mexican name above the door. Laughing

Next time buy a coke in 7/11 beforehand scrooge.

The place is more like a bar than a "family" type restaurant, where you will get free refills. If you use bar standards, that lets them justify their food and pricing too, to a degree. But I haven't been there in years - if I want Mexican, I'll go to Chili Chili in HBC, Dos Tacos in Gangnam or Amigos down from the Hamilton.

I get free refills all the time in Korea for fountain cokes. I don't know what restaurants you go to. I don't really know why I'm replying to another one of your moronic posts either, but there you go.

They also charge an extra 4000 won for a rather small side of sour cream, which should come free with the meal. Damn, I'd just buy the huge bucket at Costco for 8,000 and bring it with me next time.

There's a zillion other awesome Mexican places in Seoul. Surprised Panchos is still alive. I only ever see military guys walking into the place... pretty sure the ESL community has written it off.

I'm not really hep to the whole 'free-refill' scene, despite eating at all kinds of restaurants for decades. I've had free refills of coffee at places (always without asking), but nobody's ever offered me or my dining companions a 2nd glass (or bottle) of Coke. Asking for it just wouldn't occur to me, but if even if it did, one glass of fizz will usually do me and two would be overkill. Unless of course it's beer, but they won't do free refills on that.

Anyway, what sort of restaurants typically give out free refills of sody pop? I'm guessing it's the self-serve ones where the soft drinks machine is out in the open and accessible to customers? Or should I be asking the waitstaff at proper sit-down, full-service restaurants for free refills?

Pancho's is overpriced for the quantity and quality. They're also a bit ersatz with the ingredients and presentation. So is Santorini, with their tortilla shell pitas and, if memory serves, their side salads... we didn't expect them, and they were like those faux "Western" green salads with the gloopy yellow-mustard "dressing" that galbi restaurants toss in with the rest of the banchan.

Korea and the foreigners in it really don't merit any better than Pancho's or Santorini. Places that are better are anomalies here, they lack the proper setting and clientele.

That's how God and I view it.

Fountain coke not a bottle. I would never assume a 2nd bottle or can or cup of Coke to be free.

Basically any restaurant (not bar) that has a fountain soda machine. So that means every fast food restaurant (McD's, KFC, Popeyes, etc.) and all the western-style family restaurants (VIPs, TGIF, Outback, etc.).

Probably because of its location and clientele (bar in Itaewon, GIs), Pancho's fancies itself more of a bar, and also wants to squeeze more money out of you, so they charge for refills. No big mystery.

It was a dark period in Korea when this was the only outlet for Mexican food in Seoul. There was also an awful place in Daehangno/Hyewha that has since, fortunately, closed down. With so many other options, not to mention being able to buy tortillas in supermarkets so you can make your own, I don't see why this place is still in business.

Besides the ones I named above, there's also the On The Border chain that has restaurants in Shinchon and Samsung dong. It's expensive, but if you want "proper setting" then you can opt for that.

Personally, with Taco Bell and that restaurant in the Dragon Hill Lodge on base, I don't even know why GI's bother going to Pancho's either.

Does Panchos charge the 10% VAT and a service charge? I know a number of restraunts in Itaewon do.

Outside of Iteawon I have never seen such things except at luxury hotels.

What gives?
