Hey~

I got my publishing contract a few days ago and I'm still totally stoked by the fact that my book is slated to be published sometime next year.

Are there are any published writers out there?
Whats your experience with the publishing process?

My debut book is a poetry compilation, but I hope to cross over to fiction if it takes off.
Is it difficult to cross from one genre to another, especially fiction?

Ironically, I compiled my book at the end of my second stay in Korea (1997-2000) and revised it during my teaching time in Korea (2004).....it was a long, wierd road that led to this point........

Why do you need approval in your poetry to cross over to another genre? If you like it then do it without looking to others for approval. Wink

(Sigh). Some days my work here is easier than others.

That is really great, congratulations.

I have been published in books and magazines, mostly editorial photography and some (modest) writing. PM me if you want to discuss anything. I've not much knowledge of the poetry side of things, but I've had to negotiate the pitfalls with publishing houses (and got burned a few times too).

Cheers,

~ smw

Flat fee payment or a percentage of cover price for each printing? How many copies printed in first run?

In general, should be at least 10% for you and first print of at least 3000 books.

Keeping track of subsequent payments can be a hastle. If you're bilingual and/or kyopo, then you have a better shot of making the relationships that keep them 'honest' as far as you getting paid is concerned.

Whatever the case, congrats. It's always a good feeling to see a work come to fruition.

Well....I was not looking for validation- yet for those that scream that I am looking for it, thank you for giving it to me Cool

I took a look at my fiction writing and it seemed like there was something missing~ but when I wrote poetry, it seemed like everything was in place....I guess because a poem can have a singular subject while there are many angles to writing, especially fiction.

BWT~ Don't take me for a newbie.......I have been on the board for 8 years......this is my latest name- flamers beware Very Happy

I once have thought to become a writer and have practiced writing under a guide of award winning author ( He won award from HanKook Ilbo Sinchun Munye ) and that was when I was a high school student, but my mother was frantically against about the idea of becoming a writer ( There was reasons why she was so against, but that's another story ).

When I look back, I am glad I didn't become a writer.
If I became a writer I am probably very poor/hungry now, you don't see well off writers in Korea, they are almost all poor except a very few.

Let us know how it goes! How did you get published? Did you just mail it in to a publisher or publishers or what?
