According to Vedic spiritual science, our most real sense of self has virtually nothing to do with the temporary material body.
Our bodies have been constantly dying since they were born, yet we have always consciously been aware that we remain the same person - even as every cell of the body changes (reportedly every seven years...)
Final death applies only to the gross body - the subtle body of mind, intelligence, and false ego carries the real self - the individual soul - to its next body (be it material or spiritual).
Consciousness emanates from the soul (an infinitessimal particle of the Supreme Soul) and uses the physical body, including the brain, to interface with the material world.
The consciousness sees through the eyes, hears through the ears, controls bodily functions through the brain.
If the brain - or other vital organ - becomes seriously damaged, a particular body may become unfit for the individual soul's continued presence, and the soul will move on to its next destination.
Heaven and hell are relative concepts within the world of duality - and neither one is eternal. The eternal abode full of transcendental bliss and knowledge is completey beyond all birth, death, and suffering.
Although material suffering is all too real, the individual soul can get immediate relief from miseries by surrendering to the will of the Supreme Soul, via the guidance of His pure representative.
The goal is to get the hell out of the material universes - all of which are essentially places of misery, death - and only flickering happiness.
Real happiness is neverending - and dependent on realizing our devotional relationship to the Supreme Person.

you dont need god to send you a sign, you are living proof of the theory!
You are a perfect example of your fellow brother the chimpanzee! the way you bash the keyboard makes all monkeys envious of your talent!
When you actually have a comprehensible argument worthy of intellectual debate I might part take until then your bashing of a keyboard more and more proves you are a direct cousin of the chimpanzee.

Mmmm, well these signs are hard to deduce. On the one hand he is obviously still a cretin, who doesn't know that chimpanzees are in fact not monkeys. On the other hand there is no upper case rapage going on.
He also says one thing that is scientifically accurate,which is exactly one more than his entire posting history. A mixed bag as it were.
I will have to sacrifice an ajumma tonight and maybe clearer signs will come on the morrow. |

Re "Dasein's" question ("How exactly does this non-material soul cause a material body to act?"), I'm inclined to accept the Vedic model that finite consciousness is a symptom of the individual spirit-soul, and that both spirit and matter are emanations from the infinitely conscious Original Person.
I'm no technical or scientific expert, but reportedly there's evidence (from quantum theory experiments) that consciousness influences matter.
Here's a brief excerpt from the conclusion of an article (by the "European Vedic Academy") that surveys consciousness studies and related topics - with the aim of achieving a synthesis of science and spirituality.
Conclusion of the evidences
If we put all these fields together we have more than strong evidence for our hypothesis of a non-material conscious self and we find a lot of information for the foundations of a spiritual science which tries to discover the territory of the self and its own reality. We got evidence from empirical experiments, how consciousness influenced physical events like a random generator. We also got hints from quantum-mechanics that consciousness may play an important role in the measuring process and in the control of the brain. From neurophysiology we got evidence that consciousness might control its brain through the quantum-level of the neural functions like excitations. Stronger evidences were available in the field of investigations of near death experiences and reincarnation. And finally we dared to shortly enter the realm of spiritual culture by looking at the experiences of saints and mystics and the spiritual scriptures of their cultures.
We mainly try to work on the basis of the Vedic knowledge which is written down in Sanskrit language and deals with all different aspects of human knowledge. We try to learn from these sources about consciousness, matter and their interaction and relationship and to translate this knowledge also into the language of modern science and to get new impulses for the advancement of modern science...
