Our Vancouver school prepares foreign students for North American Uni entrance tests. Recently most of our students now are from China with only a few Korean and Japanese students because of their declining currencies. But one Korean student made a nice profit because of his father's procrastination in topping up his son's account.
I had sent Dad a few emails telling him to send $8000 Cdn. for his son's expenses and spending money. I guess Dad was hoping the won would go back up but since it kept dropping drastically, he was hesitant to send it. Dad's mega-rich but I figured the markets were hurting him and that he was going to pull his son back to Korea. On Thursday I told the student that unless we received the money that he'd have to leave on Monday.
I got an email on the weekend saying his son would have the money Monday morning and sure enough, this morning the student walked in and pulled 10mil won in cash out of his backpack that Dad had given to one of his associates who had business in Vancouver to give to his son. There was a note apologizing for not sending Canadian or US currency but he hadn't had time to exchange it. We didn't get around to exchanging it until later Monday afternoon and as a result got about $1,000 more than it was worth late last week.
When I told the son the good news that there was an extra $1k in his spending account, the son figured his dad knew exactly what he was doing. I call it dumb luck, but whatever, we got our $ so all is well. |
