The MacBooks and MacBook Pros were released last night.

Holy crow! They are priced so high! For example, the cheapest MB in the US is $999. Correct me if my math is wrong, but with the exchange rate and VAT added, that's about 1,340,000 won. This same MB is 1,589,000 won in Korea. This large, extra mark-up is new, in my experience. The MacBook Pros are stratospheric....

If this an indication of the coming inflation or further depreciation of the won, I don't know. But, I guess Apple doesn't plan on selling many units here in el-cheapo PC-land. Rolling Eyes

I suppose, if one wanted a new MB/MBP, they'd be best off having someone going home for a break to buy and carry it back from N.A..

[edit: Ooops, I meant to post this on the Technology forum. Oh well...close enough I guess Embarassed ]

Yes, incredible at that price. The low-end iMac is a much better deal. If you actually need a new computer, I'd get one before they bump the prices on those, too.

I bought my iMac in Yongsan...in the building across the street from Lotteria. I paid in cash and got a huge discount, basically dropping the price to what it costs in the US.

All the macbooks have superdrives (CD/DVD burner) now.

The prices here are really jacked up though...even with the educational discount the lowest ones are 1,490,000.

You'd be better off getting a used one about 1 or 2 months old or an imac.

umm i don't think the prices have increased at all. $1599 was what my current book was listed at when i got it.

the only real difference on the price front was the addition of a $999 model. as for their cost here in korea i think you might actually get a better deal than in the states. between the price reduction from paying cash and the lack of a sales tax, depending on your home city in the states, you could look to save quite a bit from what you'd have spent back at home.

besides, the new books are awesome. aluminum block construction, glass screens. they've been reduced in weight by 1/2 a pound and are supposedly the macbook's already fantastic screen hinge is even stiffer than ever before. i simply refuse to believe that a better constructed laptop is available anywhere on the market without having to resort to a monster like the toughbook.

I disagree. The old low end model was 1,190,000. The new low-end model is now 1,580,000. That's a big difference. This new model sells in the US for the equivalent of 1,210,000 w.

Apple in the US dropped the previous version to $999 as an entry level machine. That is before any state taxes if applicable.

In Korea, they basically eliminated the lowest level macbook and left the higher priced one with some updates.

All products in Korea include a 10%Value Added Tax (VAT). When you go and buy something in cash, they are usually just discounting the 3~5% charge the card companies would charge them for paying with a credit card. Sometimes, the marketplace sellers will go a little lower and cut into their margin if you agree to buy something else with it.
