My apartment has had a bit of an ant problem ever since my school stored some of my furniture on the roof during renovations (don't ask, I have no idea why they thought that was an okay idea, it's Korea). I have bought those ant-trap things that are poison, but they completely ignore them, even when I put them right in their path.

90% of the time I never see the little buggers, but god forbid I leave a dish out on the counter for an hour - there will be a steady stream of them next time I walk by.

How do I get rid of these ants? For awhile I was drowning them in a shallow dish of soju (they'd be attracted by the sweetness and then the alcohol would kill them), but that doesn't get at the root of the problem. I also would really, really, really like to avoid fumigating if at all possible.

Ideas? Success stories?

Go to a pharmacy. Many of them sell ant killers. Be sure you get the right kind for the right ant. Big black ones eat different stuff than little red ones, for example. Whatever my wife got at the pharmacy near here sure worked in her old apartment. It came with three little plastic vial-like packages filled with little grains of poison they took back and ate.

I have a similar problem as the OP. I arrived in Korea a month ago and my employer arranged the apartment, furnished it, etc. I guess they didn't notice my massive ant problem though. I have the little red ones that are EVERYWHERE. Kitchen, bed, bathroom, clothes, etc.

The school promised me to have someone to come out and take care of the problem but, I'd like to get some bug spray as well. Anyone have any advice on keeping them out of your trash? I'd rather not eat out every night in attempts to keep no trash at my apartment.

Does anyone know which one to buy for the little red ants?

This sounds sick and twisted, but it works so well.

If you spot an ant, kill it and leave it there.

Keep doing it for about 2 weeks. Other ants will come to pick up the dead bodies and try to kill those ones but you have to let 1 or 2 go back to the hive to let the other ones know.

First, kill all the ones in your place.

Second, find out where they're getting in and tape up the holes.

Possibly, third, leave a trail of honey to next door's apartment so they go there instead.

The wife had the little red ones. They eat sweet stuff, among other things.

Look for the stuff I mentioned... looks like little plastic vials with a flat end on them to stick on the wall or on the floor. In the vials are little brownish grains of poison.

That stuff worked wonders. Ants were gone in a week. Check larger pharmacies. Don't use sprays. That just keeps them away to come back later. This poison stuff gets 'em all.

You must find their queen and battle her until only one of you remains standing, only then can you find peace.

Look at the bright side though, I heard in korea they believe that if you hows is infested with ants, they prevent cockroaches from being able to live there.
