Mostly it's a popularity contest--Metallica will eventually get in. They've surely tarnished their legacy by not fading away and continually releasing crummy records, but they definitely influenced a visual and aural style of metal that spawned a zillion bands.
Rush should be in there, but I'll be damned if any of the members get up for the end of the evening jam.
The Stooges should absolutely be in there--as well as the New York Dolls. Everybody who owns "Raw Power", "Fun House", and the Dolls' two studio albums went out and made a band. Most punk bands owe a huge debt of gratitude to Iggy and the boys. Without the Dolls, the MC5, Iggy, Elvis, and Eddy Cochran, there is no punk.
RunDMC, they're a rap act. Yes, I was there for the crossover single, but guess what--it's still an Aerosmith cover.
Bon Jovi--immensely popular? They were at one point. So were the Scorpions, Motley Crue, Depeche Mode, Cyndi Lauper, etc. How influential were they musically? |

I'd go with the Cure, they have certainly influenced dozens of bands through-out their career. And still putting out descent stuff. DK, Black Flag along with the Ramones and every one else at the time got me into playing music and being in bands. The Smiths, influenced a lot of bands still around and a lot of people wont admit the fact that they listen/listened to the Smiths. |
