Hey all,
To make a long story short, just arrived in Seoul not too long ago and I am now thinking about a teaching job. Unfortunately I did not look too hard at the requirements (some people back home gave me bad advice, which is my fault and I was unsure about what I was going to do) before leaving.
Anyway, I am trying to get my Stuff together, I have my Original Diploma and official transcripts (unsealed). After reading a ton of crap on this boards, I see I need a CRC. So heading to Yongsam USO to get printed and send those out the State Police back home in the next day or so. (Yes they require them)
First, Do I need to get those notorized BEFORE they mail them back here, or would I just not open them until I get to the embassy if they were to do the notary here.
Secondly, can I do a Visa run to Japan? I cannot find any info about getting an interview with the Korean consulate here in Seoul or Japan. I see you can for a renewal, but not for the first E-2.
Thirdly, should I start applying with recruiters now or wait until my doc's are lined up? I have seen some posts say that schools will pick up the tab on a visa run and your flight(s) to and from Korea.
Lastly, Is it worth it? I am on a visa right now that is good for a few years so should I just look into teaching privates?
Thanks, I know it is alot of questions, but I am retard, what can I say? - I appreciate the advice in advance. |

If this is your first time getting an E-2 visa, you're going to need to interview at a consulate in your home country. You can't do a visa run to Japan.
Someone said in another thread that you can sign an affidavit at your embassy instead of getting the background check apostilled. If you put a little note in your CRC application they'll notarize it for you. |

Yes, you'll need to get the CRC. You can get that through a website. It will be apostilled, meaning it has a special seal and/or stamp on it from the issuing agency.
I would hold off on contacting recruiters. You're already here, so you should simply pound the pavement and look around for a job on your own. This definitely has its advantages. You get to meet your potential boss(es) and colleagues before committing to anything, plus you get to scope out areas to make sure there are no surprises later.
Is it worth it? Well, if you're going to be here a while, I think it is. If you're not paying off any debt back home, it definitely is, as long as the Korean economy doesn't slip into the dump. Understand this is coming from a guy who did a year in Thailand for 750 bucks a month. To me, Korea is golden.
As far as teaching privates goes, there are pros and cons. If you have no connections, you'll have to make those connections first, which may take a little while. It's your call.

Oh, I just saw "unsealed." Your transcripts are supposed to be sealed. |

You CANNOT get an online criminal check. Immi stopped accepting these a few months ago. You MUST go through your state, local or fed to get one. Each state has its own requirements. Lucky me, my state needs fingerprints. And I have to get up early on a Saturday to go to a police station that is open on Saturday just to get the prints. Yongsan USO is closed on Saturdays, probably because they keep western hours. |

Before getting into the specifics of what you need for the E-2, exactly what kind of long term visa are you on? F visa? That changes the game.
Yes, you can go to Japan for the E-2 visa. You will need to have your degree verified by the KCUE before you can go though. This can take up to two weeks.
You will need your transcripts to be sealed.
Send off your prints and have your CBC mailed back to you. Then, go to the embassy and get an affidavit for it. |

Sorry for being an idiot but what is the KCUE?
So thus far....
1. Need to get my University back home to send me Sealed transcripts.
2. Get my CRC mailed out and back, and then take it US embassy and swear that it is a real document.
3. Do the KCUE thing.
3. Find a job.
4. Go to immigration
5. Go to Japan. Get Visa
6. Start teaching
Am I missing anything? |

That's true. You can't simply get the CRC through some third-party website like of old. However, you need to start the CRC process somehow, so start by going through an official state law-enforcement agency's website. Different states require different things before processing. Again, go through a website to find out what those requirements are. Some do require fingerprints before lifting a finger for you. |
