Or Rather my would be turf...
Basically, as my school's first native English teacher, they've never had an after school class program for English...I was interested in starting one and mentioned it as a future possibility....I figured I get a month in before starting it. I haven't brought it up to the principal yet
So I walk outside to get some snacks and see some Korean guy in a suit shinier than the tin man milling around the school yard. He introduces himself and says he owns 30 hagwons (CharmEdu in Seoul) and wants to start an after school program at my school...he also seemed to be trying to recruit me because he kept mentioning the pay(which sucks) and how he wants 4 hours a day of after school programs...
He says that my principal is interested and he's visited a few times....I'm naturally a bit worried because this might cut into my future program, not to mention his is twice as expensive as mine would be...let alone what weirdo waegook he might bring it for a measly 2.1 and 22 hours a week....
Any advice......should I tell my principal to to tell him to take a hike, or could we both co-exist...I mentioned it to the guy and he said "maybe"..... |

Hahahahaha, have you met a businessman from any country?
Personally I'd go ahead and talk to the principal about your idea, and make it sound better for him than the hagwon would be. |

lol, I figure he can't cover all the students...I'm only one man...he can have all the kids I can't handle.
Even better, no housing! Just an housing allowance of $500! Ha! on a salary of 2.1?
I fear for the weirdo this guy might bring....probaly a mormon  |

Hey! I'm in the process of looking for my second job in Korea. My first one was at a standard hagwon for 2.1 and I worked 8 hours a day. Mon-Fri. Isn't 2.1 for 4-5 hours a day a pretty good deal on an E2 visa? Most jobs seem to ask a lot more!
I'm not challenging your assessment; I really don't know! It seems like some people are working so much more (in terms of hours) than others for a lot less money. I know plenty of people who are at school for 40 hrs a week and make 2.0 |

We call those people "Chumps" and "mormons"...
I talked to the other English teachers and staff....they had a good laugh about it....they said not to worry and they're pretty dead set against the guy since they like me better....I made it explicitly clear they weren't getting the best of the crop for that amount. |

So Ukon, you think that working 22 hours (total) a week for 2.1 isn't good? How much better can it get for a BA holder on an E2 visa? 22 is so much less than the 40 I did my first year. I know I got a raw deal, but I can't imagine working less than five hours a day. Where do people find these jobs?
Congrats on not doing it yourself though! And good luck with your program. I assume you have to be on something other than an E2 to do this, right?
Again, I'm genuinely curious. Sometimes the internet makes things seem sarcastic..  |

| Depends on your Principal really. If matey in the silver suit is going to give him (the Principal) a juicy 'kick-back' for allowing him (the silver fox) to run the after-school programme, then your appeals might, unfortunately, be falling on deaf ears. |

They research them....that's how they find them....not to sound like a smart ass, but I assumed everyone did that
2.1 is bare minimum....even less so with no housing....
All public school employers can start one or teach in one...it's how we boost our pay past 2.3k+ a month...yes, on an E-2 |

| I would place my bet on the man with the shinny suit. Schmoozing with the principal(the one that makes the decision) and a possible kick back is something you cannot offer. Becareful of co-workers who tell you they like you better, why would they say those things.. Maybe to lessen the disapointment that is soon to follow. |

Heh, to be more accurate, they said they like me a lot.. nobody has met this guy...not even my co-teachers....The principal actually said they'd give us both a shot....the principal said I do a planned class and it looks like they'll give him a shot aswell....
I have a Ace up my sleeve, some guy just msg'd me that he is kinda shady with a bad history...which is what I suspected from the tin man. Now to find some more info on this SOB....
I also get a brand new englishee class room and office out of the dealio!!! My current one is fine, but state of the art here I come... |

As Sun Tzu said, every battle is won before it is faught....my co-teachers are all on my side and helping plan lessons for the after school class...let's hope the TIN man hires some real chumps...for 2.1 and no housing, I'm not expecting much competition. |
