I know bringing my dog limits my opportunities, but I'm not sure if I can part with my pooch. I know how to fly with dog, he's good in small places, I'm looking for a rural job.
Has anyone travelled with or lived with a dog while teaching in Korea. What was your experience? Advice? Stories? |

Many, many of us. I wouldn't have come without them. I live outside of Seoul with a large park nearby and lots of places to walk. It was an easy process to bring them also. Do a search for DOG or DOGS on this Korea forum and you will find lots of good advice from many dog owners here. |

I lived on the edge of a suburb of busan. Lived right up on a mountain. It was brilliant. esp. for pooch. Plenty of opportunity for off leash walking if your dog can be controlled (though I'm not sure it's totally legal). |

I took in a stray while I was in Korea, I had very few problems with him. I used to take him hiking in the mountains and let him off the leash, he used to scare women hiking by themselves (he's a frightening shi tzu-terrier mix who avoids people). Oh, and I got yelled at one time for letting him pee on a tree....
Seriously though, especially since he's small it was easy. No one in my apartment building complained. I bought my food online (you can get Purina here, not sure about other brands from home) and my tiny town had lots of pet stores with treats and toys for him. Some people didn't seem to like him very much and stayed away, but no one (except for the pee incident) ever had any complaints.
I'm planning on coming back to Korea and bringing him with me. I'm looking into the regulations on that right now and I'll let you know what I find out.
One more thing to remember though is if you're planning on traveling you might have trouble finding someone to care for your pooch. Your co-workers will probably have vacation at the same time. I read that there are kennels around, but my town didn't have any. |

In my vet's office in North Suwon he runs what he calls the "doggy hotel". I think he said he charges $10 per day. I have never used it as I always travel with mine, but he seems to have a good business going with it. |

When's a good time to tell your recruiter/employer that you're bringing a dog? Is there a chance they'll turn you away because of it? |

Well I was offered a job yesterday and I'm just filling out the forms and getting my stuff organized. They need someone right away, so I'm assuming they won't refuse me because of it. And I don't want to just show up with it because I don't want to generate a bad atmosphere right at the beginning. Basically I'm wondering what other people do and how their employers react.
Since the school is the one renting the apartment, they have an interest in how the apartment is used, do they not? |

To the OP,
I brought my dog from Canada, no hassle whatsoever, you just bring her on the plane with the proper health documents. She tookall of tow minutes to clear thier pet check. Just keep in mind that some countries have terrible RETURN or ARRIVAL restrictions. I know that UK dogs have to sit in quarantine for up to 6 months or something, but no, bringing a dog TO korea is no hassle.
To the Poster asking about letting your boss know about your dog. Unless it is stated that Dogs are not allowed in the housing section of your contract then you need not say anything. If you WANT to tell them that is your choice, but if you have a signed contract already there is no need. Most lnadlords here allow dogs anyway, you are responsible for the cleaning and the damage of said dog, and as long as you dont have a yappy one, most could care less about you having one.
I sent my bosses a picture of me and my puppy, never once mentioned that i was bringing her, came and settled in. I have mentioned her at work many times and a few of my bosses have seen her and love her. There was no isuue, and i think they would have found it odd if I had said" oh by the way, I am bringing my dog"
This is only my opinion of course, but saying that you are bringing a dog is none of thier business. The dog wont affect your work, nd if they have an apartment that wont allow dogs then they need to find you a new apartment, or you need to do it, and they will get you key money.
If they say "oh you brought your dog" i would just say, yes I brough a toothbrush and the collected works of shakespeare too" and if they say
"No dogs in apartment" you should just say that they should make pet restrictions clear in the contract, and you would not have taken the job. |
