| When I arrived in Korea 2 years ago, I got a Korean license and had to give them my American license (why I don't know). Anyway, does Korea issue International Drivers Licenses? If so, where? Any info is greatly appreciated. |

Yes they do issue them BUT there are some caveats.
IF you are on an F-visa then drop into any license office and get one. You will need a passport type photo and 7k won to go with the application/
IF you are on an E2 visa then you have to have been in Korea for a minimum of 3 years before they will issue an international license (IDP).

Get an international drivers permit from AAA. Cost $15 per year. Just show the Korean cops the permit and your good to go. It's worked fine for me driving in Korea and South Africa.

You need a foreign license to trade or do the whole process (written and driving test).
If you already have your Korean license then just go in and get a replacement (take your ARC, 2 photos and 5-10k won). |

In what countries is a regular Korean license vaild? Is there a website with the countries listed?
I assume, that in order for me to apply for an Int. license back in the states, I have to show them a copy of my stateside license, which I don't have because the Korean DMV took it. Why do they make up turn in our US DL if we still have to take their exam? I can udnerstand if it was a straight swap...
Thanks for the info guys.
Oh, I found the info I was looking for:

This is what's known as incredibly bad advice. Do not follow that advice! QA must have been quite lucky to have encountered cops who don't know their jobs. If you're in Korea on anything other than a tourist visa, you must have a Korean Driver's License--not an IDL. Also, the IDL is not valid without your foreign license. The IDL is not a permit itself.
Just go to the licensing agency and get the license. It's not that hard nor is it expensive. For us Americans, we have to take a test that's half the length of the Korean test but we get the same amount of time to take it as the Koreans. Citizens of some countries don't even have to take the written test; they just need to exchange their license and pay a fee. |
