I have an offer from my school (CDI) as an hourly wage worker, I am trying to get it changed to fulltime, so i can get benefits... if they dont change it to full time.. i think i will refuse the contract... but a couple quick questions..
theyre paying me 2.7 , no experience, is this decent ?
if my school doesnt provide 50% health insurance, how much would I have to pay per month for this service to be covered in full ?
Also, my school doesnt provide housing for hourly workers, so how much would a relatively normal place be in MOK-DONG, Seoul ??
insight is welcome and i am thinking about looking for another offer... but let me know what you guys think... i have seen the CDI bashing threads lately and I read them with concern... however, i read this after i applied... let me know what you guys think ?

incite is welcome? insight? your posting is extremely mangled, as is your subject title. people tend to be more helpful on here if you speak normally, not like you're chatting online with friends.
2.7 million without housing is not good. hell, with the exchange rate, 2.7 WITH housing is merely okay. many others have said it before and will say it again. CDI is crap if you take into consideration ALL of what they're offering (or, more importantly, what they're NOT offering). there are better offers out there by far. i'd move on. |

After the full package has been calculated, I still don't understand why some people think the CDI pay is so good. |

keep in mind, what was posted in the job offer is different from what i received. They said that I would have the option of either, hourly ( which i didnt want) or salary( which i thought was better), but, they only offered me hourly. Looking back now, both contracts are pretty bad and I am not going to take it ... time to look else where besides Korea, i think |

because they don't research the available jobs well enough. |

i have researched the jobs well enough. You should take a look at the job offers on the korean board. 2.7 from cdi is the highest i have seen. if you can find a good offer please, let me know, im very interested. |

I'm making 2.6 million. Plus, I get severance, pension, nice furnished-housing, health care, more vacation time than CDI, etc. I'm really happy where I work.
My neighbor works for CDI. We have discussed our packages. I average 25ish classes a week, sometimes less in a week with a holiday. Basically, he is on 30 classes per week. Too, I have the option of netting another 1.0-2.0 if I choose to work some during summer and winter camps at 35,000 @hour.
The good jobs aren't always easy to find, especially outside of Korea. But if you are in Korea, and willing to dig around, there are decent jobs to be found.
I have a friend making 2.1 on 20 hours a week(one 45-minute class = 1 hour), less during a week with holidays. She has full benefits and decent housing. She's really happy with her job.
Me: 2.6, full benefits, 25ish classes... = 2.6/25
Friend: 2.1, full benefits, 20 or less classes... = 2.1/20
Neighbor: 2.7, minus housing/etc., 30 classes = 2.7, 2.6, 2.5. 2.4, 2.3, 2.2..... = 2.2?/30 |

any public school in the country:
Base salary for a newbie with NO qualifications other than a BA (22 classes) = 2.0-2.1 mil
PLUS (optional):
add in up to 6 supplemental classes during your 8:30-4:30 work day = +500k.
ends up with a salary of 2.5-2.6 mil for 28 classes of 40 minutes.
PLUS housing (400k), air ticket (100k), pension (100k), medical (50k), severance (200k), and 4-6 WEEKS of paid vacation (plus those extra days off for teacher's day, school birthday, sports days, etc).
Total package = ~2.850-3.350 mil + 4-6 weeks paid holiday.
Even without the supplemental pay for afternoon classes a newbie PS teacher is better off after you add in the other benefits.
Compare that to your 2.7 with NO benefits.
All of a sudden that CDI offer looks like the piece of sh|t that it really is.

PS is definitely the way to go. Believe me, I did the hagwon thing for some time. Although I made decent $$ and had good accomodations it's all of the intangibles that make the difference between the two. ttompatz mentioned many of them.
My friends (former hagwoners) and I that work in the ps system now always joke that all newbies should be subjected to hagwons. Most newbies that came in the ps system don't know how good that they actually have it in their ps. Good luck OP. |

i have a much better job, and i don't work at a public school, nor would i ever. i teach an average of three 45 minute classes a day and i get full benefits/housing with a high salary - your 2.7 is considered starting pay (and no, i don't work at a prep agency - anymore). part of it is luck, and the other half is actually finding the best deals and negotiating to a pay scale that suits your preference. the only advice i can give is not to settle for anything less than what you think you're time and skills are worth. |

wow, thanks for the replies guys, I refused to sign the contract and I sent the company the notice. I already sent another email to another school for 2.5 full benefits and 4 weeks vacation, I think. Hopefully, this will work out. The process should move along quickly because I have all my documents all ready for go.
are public schools the way to go ??????? |

For someone new to teaching in Korea with no connections, it sure beats the hell out of most of the alternatives. I don't know what plynx does. He is one of the luckier ones it sounds like. Maybe he can shed some more light on his golden position. |
